If you're ever in Kent, Ide Hill Village happens to have the highest altitude church in the county. Not something I knew till I looked it up after taking the following pic earlier this year. (Warning: modern bike!) Beautiful part of the country.

A couple days ago The Washington Dept. of Transportation announced that they were opening up the North Cascades HWY to motor vehicles on thusday(today). There is a 40 miles section of that highway that is closed during the winter months due to heavy snow/avalanche conditions. The DOT spends about six weeks clearing the snow there every spring before they open it up. During that time folks can ride there bikes on the closed section as far as the crews have cleared.
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to get out and ride it while it was still closed to cars. Northbend has been up and over this road a few times and posted pictures here. It was my first time and it really is an awesome ride. I started out in little town/community of Newhalem, and from there it's a 14 mile climb to the gate.
When I got to the gate, I came across these three guys from Bellingham, and rode with them for a few miles before going off on my own.
Rainy Pass is the first of two passes along the way it's 4,855ft in elevation.
I came across another Bellingham rider and continued on to the next pass with him for a few miles.
Washington Pass was my turnaround point.

There's something special about riding that pass. Even moreso when you do it while it's closed to cars. So envious right now Roger. Great ride and photos!

Nice shots, Roger. I've been down that route and it's beautiful. I stopped at Lake Diablo, and of course I was in a car and not biking (can't even fathom biking that far and climbing those passes, unfortunately).

From The Hague (you may have heard of it) to Vrouwenakker (you probably don't want to know). A 30-mile ride back from work, because of non-optimal planning. I'd sold my car and agreed with the buyer to deliver it in The Hague where I work. When I told mrs non-fixie she asked: 'and how are you going to get home? I'm not available to pick you up.' .... Uhhh ..... well ..... I ... uhhh ...
So this is how I arrived at work this morning. Happy it didn't rain, as there was no way I could have closed the top:
The ride home was nice, though. The expected rain showers did not arrive, there was a fierce tail wind, and the scenery was, well, 'polderesque':
When I took this picture I made three observations:
1. I should move the saddle forward half an inch, for comfort and looks
2. My little seat bag with my tools and spare inner tubes is NOT hanging from the saddle
3. I'm an idiot
I'd apparantly left my seat bag lying on the floor near the office exit. I'll probably never see it again
Forgot to bring a water bottle as well, so I stopped for a drink in Woubrugge. The Coke can is orange-colored, and says 'Hup, Holland, Hup', to make us win the soccer world cup next month:

Yes, they are, and sturdy too. Every other mini tool I've tried fell apart after some serious use. These don't. Mine are branded 'HEMA', a local store brand. I think I've seen them branded as 'BBB Scorpion' as well.
