I was able to get out once on a borrowed bike during my vacation to Mallorca. A short exploratory ride. 24 miles and 1200 ft of climbing on roads and dirt. Nice to have gears for a change, since I've been riding everything on a 1x2 drivetrain for some months now. I think it's made me a lot stronger though.

I took Sunday off, I was tired for some reason, maybe the extra hills on Sat. Monday I took a nice spin out my usual way but on the way home I took an extra loop and ended up at 41 miles. The skies were gloomy and overcast and I got a little damp from time to time.


The fabulous disappearing farm land of central PA. I believe the shorter plants are 'taters.





I was too lazy to get my act together Tue and ride before I went to the VA, so this morning I had to squeeze a short one between the Dr and salon. Just about 10 to 12 miles on the Hetchins.

I forgot to look for a nicer back drop so I just stopped under this tree in a huge church yard.

I did my commute again today, and yesterday and the day before, and the day before. Rode the Centurion on Monday, the Masi on Tuesday and Wednesday. I took the Motobecane, sew-up tires and all, today because the Masi has developed a clicking in the BB. I checked the chainring bolts and crank retaining bolts, no problem. It could be a pedal, but those MKS pedals are bulletproof. So I'm thinking it's a BB bearing, and I'll probably be tearing it down this evening. In the meantime the Motobecane is the other superbike in the spin. (A collection of bicycles should be called a spin of bicycles, no matter what that other thread says.)

Addendum-de-dum-dum: This evening I tried to find the source of the Masi's noise. I disengaged the chain, hopped on the saddle, and pedaled. Sure enough, it would go click at the same spot, with occasional clicks in another place or two. If it was BB bearing per se the offending ball should migrate around. If it was a bad spindle or cup it would always be in the same place and consistent. So I pulled the right-side crank arm expecting to open up the BB, but the BB felt smooth as silk. So I figured it was a square-taper joint, not easily fixed except by replacing arms.

So I cleaned the hole and spindle end, put it back together, snugged it all up, tried again in case the problem was just a bad fit. Problem was still there. But wait, I felt it distinctly in right foot, distinctly I tell you. Could it be the pedal?? I pulled the pedal, the threads were tighter than I expected, and installed a pedal from a different bike (a KKT Top Run off the Raleigh). No noise, no clicking! Wow, a bad MKS Sylvan? At least they are relatively cheap and available.

I tried taking the dust cap off to check the pedal bearings. No go. It was on pretty tight, if it was ever intended to come off at all. I couldn't feel any roughness in the pedal anyway. So I greased the threads and put it back on the crank. It went on fairly easily, still a little harder than expected. I snugged it down, hopped on the saddle and tried the pedals again. No noise. Could it have been the threads???

I'm going to ride the Masi on my commute tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. At least I can live with it for now.

I just ordered the updated TRP Spyres with the 160 rotors.

Wheelset parts are here. I went with XT disc hubs, TB14 rims and DT spokes. I am going to build these, as I haven't built a set in years.

Still looking for Campy Record Cf levers at a decent price and a Jagwire cabling set on sale.

I'll be lucky to get it on the road before the snow flies, but I'm not rushing.

Casey will likely help me with the build this winter if I don't finish it sooner.

We shared a Salsa La Cruz here until my son needed a larger frame. I really enjoyed that one during its brief visit.

My Peugeot Vagabond earned its singletrack merit badge today. This is the lower end of the Mt Muller trail just west of Lake Crescent on the north Olympic Peninsula. I've passed by here on several occasions, on the highway and the Olympic Discovery Trail, but didn't realize there was a whole network of MTB-worthy trails right here. Most trails around here are National Park trails and are for hiking only; no wheeled traffic allowed. Mt Muller is a National Forest trail, so apparently, anything (non-motorized) goes.


I did a little over 10 miles of relatively flat, wet-dry-wet, roots, mud, logs and stream-traversing singletrack, wishing I had worn long pants on the parts where I was crashing through the more overgrown sections with the trail barely visible at times, hedged in by ferns, thimbleberries and nettles.


After bashing and sloshing around for a bit, it opens up again the familiar Olympic Discovery Trail, which has this extravagant freshly paved trail skirting the last five miles of Lake Crescent, ending up on HWY 101 to Forks, WA.


For the record, my mudders are 32mm Panaracer Paselas. They did just fine.


I've got this weekend off, so I hope to go back to the Mt Muller trail head on Sunday and do the climbing bit on my Kona MTB. It's supposed to be pretty spectacular up there. If i make it there, I will come back with pics!
