I went out for my first real ride with my new Busch and Muller dyno light setup. 32 lovely kilometers.

Today I rode Gorge Road to Birdwood. Some of it was along the southern end of the 250km fire front bush fire I showed last week, we were lucky because temps were reaching 45c during that then we had monsoonal weather from the north put it out, it had jumped Gorge Road in spots.

The first part of the road was closed from rock falls from the rain. The road through the fire ground was closed from fallen trees in the fire, crews were cleaning that up.
On a lighter note on the way back I met a team Bianchi world tour rider wondering if he could ride through the road block. I said yes but watch for rocks so we took off me first (up hill) 10 seconds later casually with no effort rides past me and vanished in the distance, I had no hope of staying with him.

Cold but sunny enough to trick me into thinking it was a good idea to go play in the dirt. Which turned out to be frozen mud. This is Burke Lake, which was a WPA project many years ago. Nice trail around the perimeter, and within a reasonable riding distance from my house. Took me a while to get back my riding-on-the-ice-on-top-of-the-slush-on-top-of-the-mud skills, but hey, it's riding a bike, right?



All in all, a happy (albeit very dirty) boy at the end of the afternoon. Now all I have to do is figure out how to clean off the Rockhopper Comp:

I commuted to work on my bike twice this week. I started my new job on December 2 and have cycled to work only one day a week. I hope to increase, so this is a good improvement. But man, it was tough. It was cold, and I faced some serious headwinds. On Thursday, the wind shifted during the day, so I had headwinds all the way to work and part of the way home. I ride along the river, so the headwind can be strong and cold.

Hey Tom, congrats on the new job, and nice pic too! Good on you f'r doing the bike commute. I have been able to since mid-December. A busy music practice schedule for a Christmas concert, a trip to England, and very cold weather here with ice everywhere have made it impossible. Maybe next week though.

A nice day with temps in the 30's and low wind.

55 miles outside this weekend, and another 2 hours of indoor riding. Yesterday on the Croll, and today on the Lemond. A few sketchy spots on lesser used roads, but overall nice riding or January.

Haven't ridden in quite some time, so I took the opportunity to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather today:

I rode my bike partway to work this morning, first time since mid-December. After last week's very cold weather the ground was frozen, and after yesterday's rain (as seen in the broadcast of last night's Pat's game) everything was wet. The result was that my bike slipped three times before I'd gone half a block. So I turned around and got the car. Bummer. Maybe tomorrow. At least I arrived at the office safely and very early.

Well, good for you for trying. I noticed my driveway was pretty icy when I left for work this morning, tough sledding for sure. I start work at 6:30 AM, so I won't even bother trying to ride in until it will at least be light by the time I arrive. It's about a 16 mile ride. Glad you are OK.

Now that is a typical Aussie fire season photo. I spent half a year in Murwillumbah, NSW up there by Surfers Paradise. Pretty soggy in that neighborhood but when we toured around down south, we ran into some bush fires.

I had the day off today, and my daughters were heading back to school, so I stuck my velo cheapo bike into their trunk and they dropped me off in the next town over, about 20 miles by MUP. Temperature in the upper 40's with just a little wind, so it was pretty comfortable in just khakis and a long sleeve t-shirt. Stopped at Costco to pick up a polish dog lunch and a few small items I needed at work, kissed my girls goodbye and headed for home. Had a couple very light rain showers and one fairly impressive but brief hail storm along the way, but pretty nice overall, for January.

Typical rails-to-trails infrastructure, with little warning posts and signage where your cross a public road.


I SHARE THE ROAD. (With large, ambulatory poop factories)


The Dungeness River Trestle is of course a leftover from when trains ran through this path. Theres a park built around this now, with the local Audubon center directly adjacent. There's always tons of birds around the river, so it's a good spot for it.


At a couple of points the MUP leaves the grade, so you get some crazy steep (but short) hills where you go down to river crossings, then back up. There's a cute little covered bridge at this one.

The last four miles into town you skirt the ocean, with lots of places to pull off and camp out awhile, or just bliss out to the sound of the waves. (Yes, recreational marijuana is legal in my state; and no, I haven't bought any yet. But I do remember my misspent youth. Vaguely.)


In this part of the country, if your chainstay crotch looks like this after 20 miles on an immaculately tended MUP, you know it's winter. Or fall.

Or spring. Or maybe large parts of the summer.

I rode my hybrid today 60km to Checker hill (stage 1 TDU) but I'll just leave a pic of Aussies Richie Porte and Michael Rogers. The roads were packed full spectator cyclists the whole way there and back. An enjoyable ride.

Rode with a new group yesterday on what was supposed to be the nicest day of the week. 47 miles in the Frederick, MD area. Beautiful roads, hardly any traffic, great group of riders.

Nice weather never arrived, was in the low 30's when we started and mid 30's when we finished. Just before the snow started.

I took by new Peugeot U08 build out today for the first time. I finished it yesterday and it rode like a dream! A 18 mile Bronx ride to Orchard Beach and Pelham Bay Park to take in some views of the Long Island Sound.
