Man I am getting old. I remember when this bridge was the new bridge into Emerald Isle and the only way onto the island before that was the Atlantic Beach bridge. Back then there might have been 200 homes, but they have done a nice job protecting it from over development.

The wind there can be brutal, make sure you go out against it or you may not make it back.

When did @3speedslow move? I thought you were in the middle of the state.

I just got back a while ago and took a shower. I did a nice straight forward 17 mile out 'n back ride (8.5 miles each way). Darn near flat as a dime, except for the small section of road that leaves the entrance to the boat ramp/canoe launch on the river.

8.5 miles later, I stopped at Routes 522 & 60 in Powhatan, VA at Chubby's gas station and drank my water bottle.


On the return trip, I stopped (very carefully!) on the bridge on Route 522 and tried to take a photo, looking back down Route 522 and overlooking the James River.


Sorry... No photos of my '85 Fuji Del Rey (you've seen it many times on this forum anyway)... I wanted to try stopping and getting a photo along Route 522, but it was too crazy and too tight of a road. You ride straddling the white line on the edge and if you're not careful, a heavy equipment truck could push you off the road!

Having not ridden for months, I intended to ride 63 miles for my 63rd birthday, but decided I'd settle for 63 km. It's raining though, so I might not get even 6.3. I do need to get back out on the bike though.

I just rode my commute and a bit more today. Had to drop a car off for service then pick it up and of course it is the wrong direction for going to work. So I did a bit more than usual. I rode the Masi to make sure I got back before they closed this afternoon.

Started out with some rain so went with the ole Stumpy for 40 of road and dirt.

We did 515 miles on the tandem today. Oh wait, that's not right. Um, 51.5 miles, yeah that must be it.

Today was cool, threatening rain which never actually happened after the morning rain stopped. We rode the MM out to Bedford, took a few picks of a mom and her children near the far end of the MM.



The kids were pretty well hidden. I did manage to sneak a pic of one.



We had a nice lunch in Concord before continuing on to Carlisle.

It's been excellent, Chris. Today I rode a cruiser bike along the river path. It was fun, but yesterday's mountain biking was a lot more fun!

Stuck at work for long weekend, again. This is the shift that starts at 8am Friday and ends at 5pm Sunday. "So, you want to be an innkeeper?"

Good news is, we had a full house tonight and everyone was checked in by 7pm, this happens once a summer, maybe, so I put up the NO Vacancy sign, forwarded out the phone and took a spin around town. Still around 82 degrees F, hot for here!

And our Liberty-Bell-exact-replica-only-NOT-cracked (Ha! Suck it, Philly!) I remember our town bought this thing in its 1976 Bicentennial Fervor; it was very controversial at the time. That dang thing cost something like $12,000, or as much as a top-end Specialized plastic bike would run you nowadays:


Up there on 1st Street, the hotrod show-and-shine was just breaking up. I got my picture taken with an amazingly perfect minty green Pontiac Bonneville hardtop same age as me. Anyone guess how old I am? Photo taken by the owner; Darkman.


Then I rode out to the county fairgrounds, a bit too late to go to the Gun Show & Swap going on there this weekend. A pity, as I was hoping to find a vintage Walther PPK to accessorize Sir Walter Fixie. I know such a thing is a mere popgun compared to more modern ordnance, but I'm sure it would fit so well in that dainty handlebar bag. Perhaps I'll ride out there tomorrow on my Italian bike and buy a Baretta instead.


Stopped by the log yard out by the airport. Log loader attempted to lift my enormous fixie off the ground; failed.


We have a BMX track here, too. Unfortunately, the gate was locked and so Sir Walter wasn't able to take me through the whoop-de-doos. I noticed the the track is now paved in asphalt these days. What the hell is that all about? I blame the IOC.


Then back down memory lane, in my old nabe where I grew up, and the Catholic school I attended (and thrived at?) for 8 years. No kidding, I was selected "Catholic Student of the Year" when I graduated; just like my big sister was, two years ahead of me. The running joke in our family is that's actually a curse, since my sis and I were the first ones out of a brood of seven to become whatcha call "lapsed Catholics." LoL


... and the old family homestead, about a block away from the school. Many happy memories. When I was a kid, that lawn was green all summer and kept perfectly mowed, by Yours Truly.

I went out on a mixed paved/dirt road ride yesterday with a friend. A route that I've never done before, mostly on forest service roads. We had to climb a few fences and made a few wrong turns, but it was a pretty epic ride overall. Bill rode a Lotus touring rig, and I was on my PR 10. 60 miles and a very hot day.

Started out on the Snoqualmie Valley trail, but pealed of up along the Tolt Pipeline for several miles.

Went out for a short ~30-mile loop into the East Bay hills.

Started off passing one of the gems of Berkeley, the Claremont Hotel, which is celebrating it's centennial this year.



A couple climbs start from this location and go up the crest of the east bay hills. I chose Tunnel Road, about a 4.25-mile, 1,050-ft climb with nice views looking out across the SF Bay.





Then an up & down trip along Grizzley Peak Road which goes along the crest of the hills. This is a view looking east to the brown hills of Contra Costa County. That's Mt. Diablo toward the left partially obscured by the tree.



An a nice little section of redwood trees on a winding road before descending back into Berkeley.

35 miles on the Moto gr today. Ride #25 on this bike. approx 1000 miles so far this year. My goal is 50 rides for the year on the moto. A slow start because of the brutal winter this year.

Today will make you forget about the winter, high 80s and humid.

I did a nice easy 10.85 miles with my sister earlier today before it got really hot outside. My wife was busy with things and didn't want to go, and my brother-in-law wanted to go fishing, so we ended up with my sister & I going on the bike ride while my brother-in-law fished along the river.

My sister took this photo of me, standing with the James River in the background. Lots of people were kayaking and tubing down the river. Right at the "Z dam" section of the river, you can see the "chute" (by my left arm shirtsleeve), and someone's tube that floated away and got stuck in the undertow of the rapids!

Anyway, behind me is my sister's Trek 7 speed comfort bike, or "Townie bike" as she calls it. And I'm standing with my C&V '85 Fuji Del Rey 12 speed.

Lots of good riding pics this weekend. The usual expansive scenery from the PNW, JJS shows off New England's best, BA shows off the James River in the city where I grew up, and of course cb400 pulls up the middle of country (okay the northern part) with a pink bike and a picket fence. Nice going, guys!

I took the Masi out today. Got a later than desirable start, and what with today's weather prediction and yesterday's 51.5 on the tandem I didn't plan on any great distance. Ended up at 35 miles.

In honor of today's weather with the dew point hitting the low 70's, the theme of today's photo tour is water crossings, specifically the Sudbury and Concord Rivers, the Concord being formed where the Sudbury merges with the Assabet not far from Concord Center.

First we cross the Sudbury on rt117 over the new bridge rebuilt where the original bridge collapsed about 20 years ago. Alas, the new railing is too high to allow decent pics.



After a roundabout route west and north we take rt62 back east toward Concord Center. Just before rt62 crosses the Sudbury again it goes under this RR bridge (right side of the pic). They've been working on this RR bridge all the livelong year.



You may ask what this has to do water crossing. 100 yards to the left of that photo those tracks go over the Sudbury and yes that portion has also been undergoing work for all the livelong year. I took a pic but it was too boring to post.

Running parallel to the RR bridge rt62 goes over the Old South Bridge, worth noting simply because due to some historical activity and a poem by Emerson the Old North Bridge gets all the publicity! The South Bridge Boathouse here is a favorite place to rent a canoe. No, that is not the RR bridge over there; the RR bridge is behind me.

From Concord Center we run north for a mile or so on Lowell St and cross the Concord River. A popular canoe and boat put-in is just to the left. This view is to the south, upstream. Just beyond the far canoe is the confluence of the Sudbury from the left and the Assabet from the right.



After an immediate right and a quick downhill run past the Battlefield Park HQ and another right on Monument St we recross the Concord River southbound with the park HQ building in the distance. If you're paying attention to the directions, don't bother too hard. The Concord generally flows north into the Merrimac but through here it takes a few bends eastward then back north.
