Also, plan on Sea Salt for lunch when you are at Minnehaha Falls. The lines aren't so bad if you arrive when they open.

40 years of use from a saddle is not too bad.
Last of a few vacation days today. 43 miles of gravel with generally rolling terrain, but a few steep climbs in the last 10 miles.

I hate to confess that I snuck into town without swinging over your way, Jim, but I did. We have a pretty full relative schedule but I did take Saturday morning off to meet with @ScottRyder over in North Beverly. We set the two Raleigh Professionals together then headed over to Hamilton then up thru that very nice country out to and in to Ipswitch. Pingree Woods, Bradley Palmer State Park, ponds and cornfields. Very nice just following Scott and letting him know the roads and how to get home. I was also please to see so many bicycles out using those same roads. Cars and trucks gave a wide berth - obvious that everyone shares the roads a lot. Stopped in Ipswitch for a bit and talked to a full zoot carbon/carbon rider who crowed about his Raleigh Gran Prix that he also loves riding. You never know who might turn out to be C&V.

No fancy pics, just a few great local rides. I hadn't ridden it yet this year so I took the Cornelo out on Sunday and had a great 20ish mile ride.
I made some changes to the Volpe on Sunday and took it our for a 26 mile spin. I liked the Celeste fenders I had in it but the looked bulky and along with the racks it just looked ungainly. I took the racks and fenders off, and put the wood fenders from the Hetchins on it. Looks much better now.

All I do during the week is ride back and forth to work, except yesterday when we played a show. Today we waaaaarrrrmmmm and hooooomid. I left the office about 45 minutes later than normal to let the traffic and heat subside. After last night's show I was pretty tired too. Now a good stiff beer is helpinf wuite a lot.

Took the 1972 MERCIAN VINCITORE on the Thursday night club "E" ride on the Indiana prairie. WRCC (Wabash River Cycle Club) ten of us.
I finished with a 13.0 mph average speed, and distance of 25 miles. It was an "E" relaxed conversation type ride, so this was a speed average correct in this category.
(Some wind but at these speeds not really a problem.) I pedaled out in front quite a bit, cruising at 18~19mph at times. Just enjoying the ride of my 43-year-old rolling art object. Then I would stop and wait for the group at the next turn or rest-stop. These leisure rides are fun, nice times, no pressure to hold a position in the pace-line, riding two-abreast on smooth open prairie roads with almost zero traffic.
At times I would look down at the bike and it just brings back so many happy memories of my youth in the early 1970s. Taking off with my friends or alone, really not a care in the world. Seeing my shadow cast upon the mown roadside in the evening sun, spinning the pedals, wishing the summer would never end. On rides like this, a 40-yerar-old bike is giving-up nothing to the fancy carbon ones.
Times like these today, I don't feel 58 years of age. These are moments to treasure and they help to live a longer and healthier life as well. Thank you to ride leader Gary for a pleasant evening on the prairie - that is all.

We did 50.7 miles on ye ol' vintage (1982) tandem today, which is of course the same tandem we always ride. Temperature hit 90F but the humididity was down from mid-week. We left directly from home through town then went west on rt117. First stop, Drumlin Farm:
Had a spot of bother a bit later on when the FD decided to move on the stoker's ST. Fortunately I carry a small adjustable wrench, which I suppose I should call a croissant wrench because the bike is French and all the threads are metric. Between that croissant wrench and the metric screwdriver we were all set.
We were recognized twice today. Once was by a couple of runners who spoke to us after our lunch stop in Concord. They said they had seen us a lot. Well, we do ride out that way quite often. The second time was when we were passed by another tandem and the stoker called us both by name. We didn't have much time to respond because they blew by us and turned to attack a hill I hadn't intended to go up today (though we often do). We wouldn't have caught them anyway! I think she was a local rider who was active in the MetroBoston thread when we started riding the tandem and who gave us much good advice. I have her email address here somewhere and will have to drop her a note.
They say timing is everything. As I was putting the tandem in the basement five minutes after we arrived home we heard a long peal of thunder. Five minutes later the rain started.

Yesterday the Blue Angels were practicing for Seafair here in Seattle, so the kids and I rode bikes from Bellevue out to the bridge deck on Mercer Island to watch em. Less than 10 miles, but the kids and I had a great time watching the show.
