Birthday today and I didn't get the 50 miles in - just too cold and dreary to deal with it. Instead I spent time building up the Gitane Olympic and taking it on a shorter shake down cruise.

Tomorrow is my 67th birthday. Since I have a music commitment tomorrow I had to do my birthday ride today. 73 miles on the Masi in brutally windy conditions, 15mph gusting to 30mph, high temperatures around 45degF. I used my 42/34 combination more than once and not always because the hills were steep. I rode west on rt117 into the wind to Bolton, north through Harvard to the Boxboro line just west of I495, south on the far side of I495 back to rt117m east into Sudbury, north through Concord to Carlisle, then back through Concord to home. The run west showed an average speed of 13.4, but when I reached Concord on the return the average was 14.1mph. The experimental data says that tailwinds do make a difference!
A large cemetery in Maynard with remnants of Veterans Day still in evidence.
Shortly after turning onto the local roads I saw a beautiful 6-point buck. He crossed the road and wandered into a field. I didn't stop to take a pic. He was about 60yds away watching me as I watched him. This time of year the bucks are out looking for women and I sure didn't want him to think I might be a rival.
A seemingly isolated intersection a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Isolated as it may have seemed, while I ate a sandwich a car went by about every 10 seconds. One driver in a pick-up slowed and asked if I was okay.
Autumn is winding down here in New England.
Finally, in the interesting signage department, a conscientious sign even if it is technologically incorrect.
Of course this is really a map database error though I suppose a GPS error could make you think you were somewhere else instead!

Did a windy 25 mile ride in Besford, Amherst, and Mont Vernon NH yesterday. First snow (although just barely) of the season!

Took my Trek 660 out today, second time time I've ridden it this year. First ride, I got a blowout on the front coming down a hill a about 25. It's been idle since then, I decided it was time to change it up a bit. I changed out the drivetrain to a 9 speed setup, but decided to keep the friction down tube shifters. It really does shift like butter with this setup. Rode 30 miles in nice conditions, stopped for few pictures. Here is the bike as it sts now.
I stopped at Glasgo Pond in Voluntown, CT, which has been drawn down for repairs to the old dam. There is an old bridge showing that has been about 15 feet underwater for the past 150 years. I took a few pictures.
While I was taking the pictures, I left my bike leaning against a tree. When I got back, the wind had pushed it over (my fault, I know) and there was a nice blemish on the seat stay.

43 miles and 4 flats today. Three of them happened before I actually started riding! I took the bike off the hook and the rear tire was flat. I took the tube out, patched it put it back in, inflated it and the patch gave out. Grabbed an old tube that has been kicking around my basement for a while, installed and inflated it and it split right near the valve. Grabbed a tube out of my son's bike and finally hit the road.
Quick stop to adjust the handlebars a bit downward.

I didn't ride. Had a music commitment this morning. Then did some bike wrenching instead. I switched a friends bike over from friction DT to indexing. It took a long time. The bike is a nice Shogun, a good C&V qualifier, but the owner is a youngster who needs guidance and is really just getting into serious cycling.

It was great until that last flat! The wall is what is left of an old barn along the route I take. BTW, I switched the wheels on this bike from a set of VO touring wheels to the Mavic 501 & Mavic Ceramic rim set from a somewhat modern Fugi I snagged at Play It Again Sports. What a nice change!

Here in the North San Francisco Bay Area most of our fall color is in the vineyards. My wife and I went on a short camping trip to the Both-Napa Valley State Park and took a couple rides in the Napa Valley and Knight's Valley on our tandem.
We also have a few colorful cows.
Night time temperatures were in the low forties, daytime temperatures in the mid sixties and sunny.

I just rode my commute again today. It's been cold here, upper 20's when I leave for work. Yesterday I didn't ride because it was supposed to rain hard. It didn't. Today it was supposed to rain in the morning but it had blown over by the time I was ready to leave so I rode. Temps in the 50's when I left for work but back down to the 40's when I returned. Still, a nice commute. Happy Friday, everyone!

Happy weekend Jim, I only got to commute by bike once in the past two weeks. I need to leave the house at around 4:45 AM. Couldn't convince myself to do it when it went into the 20's!
