Birthday coming so picked a day with best weather to ride a favorite route and increase mileage to 65 for the first time this year. 70s and partial cloudy. Ride into Mt Rainier Natl Park at the Carbon River Entrance. To get to the desired mileage, the start was in Orting to Buckley (with the tasteful Veterans Memorial) to Wilkeson, then Carbonado and into the Park. The Carbon River is primarily a glacial melt river and the water is not clear. The DeRosa was a perfect conveyance - light wheels for climbing (Mavic GEL280/GL330 w/ tubies), solid racer handling for the downhills, all day comfort due to excellent fit. Additionally, I like BIG trees.

My normal 20 mile loop. Sometime you have to stop to appreciate the beauty right at home My average was only 11mph after several stops for photos.

Wow, great stuff, WW and F00.
We took the tandem out for 52 miles today, which I believe is our longest ride this year. Between the band schedule, the weather, and our health the summer hasn't offered much opportunity to ride. The car was full of sound reinforcement gear from a show last night and I was too dang tired to unload it. So we left directly from the front door instead of driving out to a frequent starting point in Bedford. The weather was hot, temps in the low 90's, but the dew point was in the low 50's so it felt just fine. Now I'm sipping a bit of Uinta's Hop Nosh and, um, re-hydrating. Yeah, that must be it.
No grandiose vistas in today's pics. Just some local color. (When my pic server finally comes back up you might see these pics.)
The tandem at Depot Park in Bedford. "Do not lean bikes against building." Okay, what about the garbage can and the cones?
Spotted at Fern's in Carlisle, three blind mice. No, um, three white bikes. In the old days they'd be three Peugeots, probably all UO-8's.

I hooked my 1987? Specialized Hardrock up to my 1972? Grumman cannoe (on a dolly) and towed it a half mile to Narrow Bay. From there my wife and I paddled over to Patersquash Island where we anchored the canoe and raked for clams. Came back with three dozen clams that I smoked over a hickory fire and we ate them for dinner. Mmmm. Only a mile of riding, but lots of exercise, lots of sun, and dinner. Mmm.

Had a pleasant 4 hour bimble with some friends. Stopped in Lumberville for a nice lunch with homemade sausage and potato salad.
Saw lots of interesting sights.
But, the ride didn't really satisfy my need for speed.
So after arriving at home, a drank down a smoothie - made with the power of real blueberries - and set out again.
Ahhhh...that's more like it.
Merganser approved.

Did a 45 mile loop with a few friends and tested out the Bianchi sport sx with 105 group. Felt good throughout the ride and even better after a drink and wings at Hooters....
I've been off my bike for a a few months and now my thighs are stiff and sore.

It was about 63 miles on my new old clunker the other day; Forks to Port Angeles, mostly on the Olympic discovery trail and Hwy 101. The bike is my entry in the $100 Clunker Challenge, a freebie 1980 Univega SportTour on which I spent a whopping $0 on to refurbish, and a strenuous 5 minutes to get into riding shape. (I filled the 30-year-old tires and squirted some WD-40 on the greasy bits). We'll see how the judges on that thread feel about the minimalist approach
Section of the Olympic Discovery Trail I've never been on before, off Mary Clark Rd south of Sappho. Brand new paved rail-trail section that seems almost a miracle since it's so far out in the middle of nowhere. Shows the dedication and foresight of the people making the Olympic Discovery Trail a reality. I was the only trail user in sight that day - not a single other biker or hiker there. Almost eerie.
It dumps out onto a well-paved Forest Service Road number something-or-other on its way back to a short stretch of Hwy 101. You can see where the loggers laid off clearcutting for the day, one day a couple years ago.
This part of the ODT roughly parallels HWY 101 a mile or two south of the highway through Forest Service lands, the detour from the highway adds an additional 3 or 4 miles, but is so much more pleasant than riding with the fast, loud traffic. There's a bit more twisty-turny stuff, and it only crosses the Sol Duc River once, unlike the highway.
Of course the prettiest part is going around Lake Crescent, where a couple miles of the trail is still very primitive. But the rough section is so short now, with recent improvements, I haven't ridden my MTB out this way in a couple years.
Mud.
Obligatory shot on the Lyre River bridge, NW end of Lake Crescent. Almost too pretty.

Got back earlier this morning from a very short, but nice, 6.00 mile ride around West Creek Pkwy business complex, west of Richmond, Virginia.
I wanted to test myself, my sciatica, my lower back, etc... and go up on the 52t chainring, and try to maintain over a 15mph speed. At any sign of tenderness, muscle strain, back pain, I'd shift back down, slow way down and take it easy. But the good new is, I was able to ride with the gear combo of 52/19 and not have a problem.
As seen in the photo below, I got back to the little pullover area in the business complex and two other younger guys also pulled in behind me. They had newer, high tech, Cervelo and S-works road bikes. They noticed my C&V '85 Fuji and (not exactly rude) sort of made a face. I looked at them and their bikes, and spoke up, "1985... An old classic Fuji... Still going strong!". The one younger guy had a deer in the headlights look and said, "Dude! That's as old as me!"
*sigh* I must be getting old!

A video from a ride last Thursday at Mt. Baker @RogerM was along for the ride. This video is taken from the Parking Lot at Artist Point down to the Heather Meadows section of the Mt. Baker Ski Area. The descent continues after the end of this video for another 10 miles or so...

Yesterday, my wife and I took two rides which combined fun, errands and (incidentally) pain for me. Normally I have more stamina than she does. Perhaps I didn't eat enough beforehand, and the heat was probably a factor. The biggest factor might have been my chronic foot pain which is worst on the bike. I'm seeing a second podiatrist about it tomorrow.
We did 10.8 miles on the tandem to one building supply business. The counter guys confirmed we were the first tandem team ever to arrive there. GPS tracks here.
Then we took our singles and my trailer to another building supply store. We picked up some food on the way and stopped at a town fair which had a petting zoo. GPS tracks here.
There were pygmy goats. One of them chomped on my leg hairs. Someone there said, "They eat everything."
At night, we drove the SUV to a diner and a movie. We saw The BFG, an animated "family" movie based on the book by Roald Dahl. Very nice movie. Dahl was such a good writer for kids. I made sure to eat a huge dinner, and diners are good at serving oversized portions.

Yesterday's ride was just a pleasant ramble around Metro-northwest, Waltham to Carlisle and back. Today we went out with a purpose, to pick up veggies at Hutchins Organic Farm in Concord. We ended up 40.8 miles and 37.8 pounds of veggies!
Even better, we stopped here Welcome - The Robbins House for a bite of lunch and were treated to a lovely and unexpected cello concert.
Hutchins Farm:
Irrigation in progress, most certainly using water from the Concord River just beyond the far trees. I suspect the windmill to the left of the field hasn't been use much lately.
And the obligatory loading of the bike:
The stuff you might miss when you run your errands in a car!

Today was Katy Flatlands day in Katy, TX. Did 62 flat miles in scorching Texas heat. No C&V out there that I could tell but two of us rode our 80's Raleigh USAs, albeit fully decked out in modern components. Great fun!

The last picture makes me want to come to CA and have fun @djkashuba.
I am combining 2 rides. One of 40 miles on Sunday. The cooling towers in the distance are near my house and this is at the turnaround for me. It sometimes amazes me how far you can go on a bicycle.
I rode with these 2 dabbers last night, rountrip about 12 miles to the local Wawa for refreshments.
At least my kids know the drive side rule.

I headed north from Boston this morning to meet BF-er @ScottRyder in Ipswich, MA, for lunch at the Ipswich brewery, about a 43-mile ride. The route was one I just plucked from ridewithgps, but it was quite pleasant with only light traffic for pretty much the last 25 miles. One stretch in Topsfield, MA, looked like this:
But that was only a half mile; the rest was on low-traffic, farm roads through Boston's north shore. Scott captured me at our lunch spot:
I was on my '94 Bridgestone RB-T, which I bought from BF-er @roger_m. It's a super comfortable, country road kind of bike. After lunch, I caught the commuter rail back to Boston's North Station:
Then, it was a quick, 5-mile ride back home. All in all, a very nice, summer day.

No pictures, boring. Did second run of 8.5 mile loop. A little bit faster this time. I can't say how much because I forgot to turn Strava on until nearly 1/2 thru.
Mis-fired my water bottle for the first time EVER. Another confidence shaker. It survived the experience as there was no traffic in my direction. Shortly after that, maybe 20' in front of me, a doe bolted across the road. That's never happened to me before, either.
