Had a nice ride around the local area. Wasn't anything overly special, but here is some of the scenery I get on an average ride.

And here's one I bet a few people recognize. It's about three miles from my house.

the first thing that popped into my head was the tv show Dallas, which is funny because I'm not sure I've ever seen the show. I believe that was an early 80's show and I was born in 76.

Anyway, now I have to know, why should we know that house?

Because it is indeed Southfork, the Ewing Ranch House from Dallas.

txvintage - looks like you had a good ride. I need to get the blue Gazelle A-Frame down for some Jan 1st miles later this week (when indeed it is Jan 1st and I have some time during the daylight to ride).

There's a ride out in Blue Ridge on New Years Day. If I can talk the wife into taking over the soccer parent duties I'm in for it. Otherwise, I'm winging it on when I can get on the bike.

It helps being off this week. Well, it would help more if everyone would stop making plans for my free time..........

Temps were in the 60s today in Denver. I went for not one but two rides. This morning I took the Raleigh DL-1 out for a 15-or-so mile "Confluence Cruise," riding along city bike paths and stopping for coffee. It was so nice that when I got home I turned around and took the Ultima SL out to Morrison and Red Rocks Park (about 35 miles round-trip). Tomorrow drops 30 degrees.

Climbing in the park (another rider descending)

Not today but New Years Day. Glendora Mountain Road to Baldy Village and back the same way,
including weaving through suburbia to and fro. 55 miles round trip, 5000' of gain and loss.
Up to 8% grade but mostly sustained at a moderate 5%.

Some locals call this one of finest road rides in Southern California, and one most concur that
it is excellent indeed. If you like climbing, that is. The route traverses ranges and ridges high above
the San Gabriel burbs, and more than half of the ride is on a smoothly paved yet seasonally
closed road. No traffic in SoCal!

http://www.fivenineclimber.com/image...azesa/gmr3.jpg
In and out of gullies and defiles the road traverses, open, empty and up, up, up.

http://www.fivenineclimber.com/image...azesa/gmr1.jpg
The balloon, from a New Years party, held up for the entire ride, even the 40mph descent!

On the way back. The turnaround point, Baldy Village, is below the snowy peaks in the background.

Didn't ride anywhere today. Or yesterday or the day before. Ice storm over the weekend:

http://os2.dhs.org/~john/ice-storm.jpg

Spent 2 hours yesterday chipping ice off the sidewalk and driveway and I'm still not done. Colder than h**l today (-12C) so that ice ain't going nowhere anytime soon.

Lost my picture, somehow:

It has been windy all day here in Denver, but I was feeling some good energy and I wanted to take in the fleeting holiday decorations before they take them down/are gone.

This is LoDo (Historic lower downtown) Denver...It's usually nice and quiet after 10pm.

I pulled out the Fuji Special Road racer...

Another solo ride. Seem to do a lot of those.

Los Angeles suburbs to above Crystal Lake in Azusa Canyon. 48 miles roundtrip, at least 5000' of gain, 2hr 11m up, average 10.2 mph or so.

Descents have started to scare me, as I get older. Maybe that's good. Above 40mph I reach for the levers and start squeezing hard. Also those tall frames I ride have always had a tendency to start that self reinforcing fork/headtube death wobble at high speed. Frightening.

Todays adventure started out good. Most of the ride is closed to vehicles, despite smooth, dry pavement. Felt strong here after 5 days straight of big climbs. Above 4000' the forecasted desert winds set in, with long hard gusts of 40-45 mph. Up high, on some favorably oriented stretches I coasted UP a 5% incline! That's a first. Won't mention how it felt when the wind was dead on the nose.

http://www.fivenineclimber.com/image...a/crystal2.jpg
Looking down canyon about half way thru the descent.

http://www.fivenineclimber.com/image...a/crystal1.jpg
The high point was here, right before a corner around which the wind howled
so strong that all further progress was impossible. Really, I tried.

Back down by the cryptic sign.

Sadly, no. It looks like a great place to ride with all the climbing and switchbacks. :)

Just did a metric century around the outskirts of Christchurch on the Mercian. First 25km were brilliant as there was no wind and very little traffic other than cyclists. The Northeast wind picked and got stronger as my ride went on and about half my ride was into it.

I haven't ridden my road bike for a while so I expect to have stiff shoulders and neck tomorrow. Still it was a nice ride and a very pleasant way to spend a warm Sunday morning.:D

My home Mtn is snowed in right now, so I spend a LOT of time on Lookout Mountain, CO these days :thumb:

Cool! I had a big crash at about 0:43 (part 1) last year on a similar speed run. RIP Raleigh Pro, but I survived to speed run another day.

Sweet!!

What happened, did the tire give out? Did somebody get too close to you? I've been lucky in that I have never crashed on the road (have on the C. Gulch Trail though) and the only thing that usually gets damaged are my brake pads. I've burned more than my share of pads on Lookout :p

I rode a crummy old Paramount up a lil' hill today...

Today, Sunday 25th of Jan, went for an hours ride. Went with the Hanover Bike Club. Actually one other member Pat, and had a great time. I rode my son's bike as a 'shake down'. It is a Raleigh Competion GS ('79) and was great. I'll have to post some pics of the rehab of it.

I still can't figger out a way to keep my toes from going numb. I think it is a circulation thing as the rest of the body was fine in the 29* F temps. Other than that, I had fun.

No exciting scenery shots for me tonight, just some crappy cell phone pics of me and my DL-1 at Albertson's, picking up some groceries.

I haven't posted here in a long time..... but then again, I only have about 160 miles in the books for 2009. Anyway, Bikingshearer and I hooked up Sunday for a nice little 43 mile jaunt out amonst the rolling hills of Livermore. It was a bit windy, and chilly as well - I don't think it got past the mid to high 50's all day.

In any event it was nice to get shed of the cabin fever brought on by recent rains, and we had a nice ride. The hills are greening up quite nicely! :)
