No pics, but considering this my 1st opportunity in a while to say more than "uh, around the block?"...

Just over 30 miles on Saturday, friends dragged us out of the house and away from remodeling, even drove us to/from starting point. Bethesda, MD to Falls Church, VA, via parts of Washington DC, all but a couple of blocks on nice paths. Actually decent scenery, and makes me re-think (SOME!) the avoid-cities requirement I usually have (uh, the last time I biked in DC might have been the time we paused to take part in an Impeach Nixon march).

Take aways: wow, combination of 90+ heat, being too old & out of shape, and the 42x18 bottom gear meant a succession of short steep ascents climbing up from the Potomac river almost did me in (wife did fine). Amazing how a lunch & beer at a brew pub had me feeling better for the return half of the ride. Oh, 30-year-old brake pads, even Campys, completely useless on a steep enough hill, so I think I'll at least try some Koolstops.

Alas, had a big tear in my 1974 Detto Article 7 shoes, I think they've had their last ride, and I was so proud of having riveted in the TA #39 cleats myself, back when I was 18. Probably for the best, I'm a half-size (US) bigger now for shoes, and had to keep flexing my toes so the feet wouldn't go completely numb.

Really busy paths, I kept my eye out for anything remotely C&V but no-go except for us.

We got a late afternoon ride in today. After yesterday's ride and a late evening, we slept in, finished setting up camp, went shopping for some groceries and finally got to our bicycle ride. We rode from Harold Parker State Forest to Middleton Massachusetts where the Richardsons has their ice cream stand (or whatever you'd call it). We each ordered banana splits, which were wonderful, to put it mildly. :d

Three shots at Stearns Pond.

Yummy stuff! Ice cream and fat tire bicycles: a combination that's hard to beat.

Nice pics, pg. Bet you didn't take your bike into the lake!

How were the roads over to Middleton? What route did you take?

Where'd You Ride Today? (New & Improved)

Let's just put it this way: we did all we could to avoid riding route 114. That is a horrible road for a bicycle. We basically took a route similar to that you showed me last evening. It worked out well with only a couple short climbs.

Good to hear.

Now about taking the bike into the lake, if you'd gone 15 miles or so further east you could have ended up here.

Wenham Swamp on the Ipswich River. (Sharon rides point when we do this stuff.)

Ooh, that looks nice! We've not finished planning tomorrows's ride so it's possible we can fit something like that in. We're planning around 40-45 miles, and didn't want to drive the car at all, so that just might work!

I posted this in "every day pictures", but I suppose it belongs here too.

My daughter and I went out for a ride today, we have been going out 2 days per week. We rode a tad over 19 miles. We took a really nice, relatively new MUP to the local bike shop. After buying some brake housing, we headed back home, winding through city streets. I was thinking that we were going to take the other MUP... but it's closed until August 31st.

We got in 14 miles on the tandem this afternoon. I had figured on a quick solo run but then Sharon mentioned the tandem. Okay, so we started our usual run over to Lexington. I wasn't looking forward to the 13% grade up Concord Rd, and when some road maintenance roadblocks suggested we turn I made an executive decision to go east into Cambridge instead. That brought about a stop at the Watertown post office. Then on the return we stopped at the local Stop&Shop, which is what happens when the bike has pannier capacity to carry groceries. It ended up as an urban-ish 14 mile ride with some errands thrown in for good measure. Not a bad day on the bike!

The weather today is nearly perfect! A14 mile ride is a nice little ride, especially when you can fit in errands.

So, Dallas, did you get your planned 40 mile run in today?

For those who haven't seen it, that Bilenky is gorgeous, very stylish paint and visually all of a piece. Copper rivets, brown leather saddles and bar tape that all match the paint. (And personally I think that big chainring looks right at home there, even if it is unusual. Heck, the whole bike is unusual!)

After I finished up work today Sharon pushed me out the door for a bit of solo work. Took the Bianchi into Lexington and back. Tomorrow, alas, I have a 9AM meeting at work (I hate work), so I can't do the bike commute because the earliest I get to the office is 9:15 even if I take the very early train. Bummer.

Where'd You Ride Today? (New & Improved)

Today my better half and I got onto the Bilenky Tandem and went for a ride from Harold Parker State Forest in Andover MA over to Ipswich MA.

Just as we were starting the ride, a local lady started talking to us as we were getting off the bike to go around a gate. As it turns out she and her husband have a tandem (or is it a couple tandems?) and a long conversation ensued about bikes, riding, tandems and whatnot. We've now been invited on a ride that they are trying to set up with some of their friends while we're up here on holiday.

Anyway, on the way to Ipswich, we made a few short stops along the way, including at Bradley Palmer SP. We then had lunch at the Clam Box before heading back. Overall mileage for the day was just under 44 miles so we've managed to ride more than 100 miles over the past 3 days. Obligatory pics? You bet!

Indeed, we made just a snick under 44 miles riding over to Ipswich and back. We're both a little tired, but had a really nice day on the bike. My brother is arriving this evening, so we probably won't be back on the bike until Thursday evening or Friday morning, so our legs will get a little time to recuperate.

I hope the outdoors rub off on her. I've always liked being outside. The bike is a 2002 Mercian King of Mercia with a trailer hooked up to it.

Rhode Island/Connecticut 50/50 Century

I had the day off and the weather was beautiful, so I decided to get a nice long ride in. The ride was split almost exactly 50/50 in RI and Ct. One of the fun aspects of this ride was that I went through some towns in CT which I have only ridden through once or twice before and I went through them north to south instead of east to west. Cranston-Scituate-Foster-Killingly-Dayville-Pomfret-Brooklyn-Canterbury-Lisbon-Jewett City-Hopeville-Voluntown--Sterling-Coventry-Scituate-Cranston 104 miles elevation gain 2569'

Mt Hygeia Schoolhouse (1840-1952) Foster, RI

I wanted to get closer and take a better picture, but it was too overgrown and it looked like deer tick heaven, so I passed on a better angle.

here's a link with more Foster schoolhouses:

https://www.fosterpreservationsociety...hoolhouses.htm

A couple of miles done the road

Killingly CT

I could hear fish sucking bugs off the surface of this pond. Weedless lure a must!

Killingly CT

This steeple has seen better days.

In case your wondering corn is growing everywhere in RI and CT

No sleep till

Brooklyn CT is a beautiful town. I went through Dayville first and then later Brooklyn and the contrast between the colonial and early republic architecture in these two towns was pretty dramatic. I'll have to record that on another trip.

A nice equestrian statue of Israel Putnam in Brooklyn

better lighting from this side

169S between Brooklyn and Canterbury CT

Old barn on the town line of Canterbury

I went by Moses Cleaveland's birthplace and cemetery in Canterbury CT

Absolutely beautiful markers at this cemetery, just one to share (I took over 30 pictures here)

Moses Cleaveland, founder of Cleveland, among other things

He looks fairly stern. This guy was at Cleveland for a heartbeat and gets the city named after him!

Man, that ice cream looks good! I'm an ice cream junkie, I could eat the stuff until I explode. You two have really been getting that tandem around, thanks for all the great pictures.

Matt, 14 and I took some vintage British "Heavy Metal" for a roll through NJ's Great Swamp

Thought we might run across a bear....maybe a turkey....or a deer......nope, just loads of bugs this time

Less than hour outside of NYC, and 1/2 from the NJ Ports, it's nice to be able spin down a country lane

The bikes we took were a '61 Hercules 5 speed

and a '62 Raleigh Sport

Where'd You Ride Today? (New & Improved)

Today we went on a short ride (around 8 miles) on some dirt roads and gravel paths in Harold Parker State Forest. The body of water in these pictures is Stearns Pond.

Beautiful bike and scenery. Are all those water bottles full? Seems like a huge amount of liquid to be carrying for an 8 mile ride!

I met up with forumites Andycapp, Scozim, and Drillium Dude for a short ride then watched some track racing at the Marymoor Park velodrome on Friday. Photos in this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...0#post14592640

Fantastic night at the races and also the ride before hand. We hooked up with another rider on a 1986 Tommaso decked out with full Campy (even the slow stopping Delta brakes). He joined the pace line - tons of power in his quads - when we decided the guy riding the Cervelo was just getting too irritating. 24 miles in total and tons of fun.

Drillium Dude - the Master of the Corncob

Andycapp's bike:

Yep - the first bike (tan one) is old steel. Last year I only saw one. Yesterday at least three, this incognito tan one, a Bianchi and a Basso

Funny, when I was in high school, 114 was the nicest road I had ever ridden. Either I was a very unpicky city-boy, or the route has changed.
