Sunday I rode 65 miles
It was a club ride, Ride The South Sound, and it was personal best for me.
Ugh. I was about dead after it. Think I'm not recovered enough to ride tomorrow.
Weather was amazing. Cool and just right for riding in a T-shirt and shorts. A very light mist fell a few times, but it never amounted to rain.
At one point, ironically on Young Road (which you have to be to ride it), I was stopped, panting, and trying to catch my breath. Car pulled out of the driveway and stopped behind me. I looked over, and the driver rolled down the window to ask if I was OK or needed help. Said I just needed to catch my breath, I fine, and thank you. She nodded and went on. It was a mother with two small kids in car seats in the back, so I must have looked completely non-threatening and/or pathetic.

This was a short ride in Xel-Ha Mexico while on vacation. Took the crappy mountain bikes they give you to the top of the river, get in a tube and float down.
My 11 year old making a big splash.
BTW, these pictures were in the camera my wife dropped and fell to the bottom of the lagoon. My "I told you so" that she would loose it was not well received. The camera was toast, but the memory card was fine.

I see a lanyard, or maybe waterproof camera in your future! Glad the pictures were safe, that is the part you cannot replace. We also lost our camera on Labor Day weekend. I don't care about the camera, but I really wish I had the pictures.

I laughed when she dropped it, the camera meant nothing to me. Then when I realized all the pictures from the trip were on it I almost cried. We had to wait until we got home to test the camera card. That was a great feeling when we were able to see the pictures.

Today there were a lot of visual reminders that Fall is here. The path has lots of color now, mostly yellow, the swimming pool that I pass by has been drained and my shadow was getting pretty long around 7:00pm today.

MTB ride cut short last night - had to turn around after about an hour on Tiger Mountain when my Crank Brothers pedal failed - the retention spring broke so my right foot wouldn't lock in. After already jury rigging a broken retention spring holding my front brake pads together earlier in the ride, I took that as a warning that it was time to call it a day. Gonna work on that bike this weekend

Yesterday I rode the Masi around the PLR and then up Cadillac Mountain. No pics until Tuesday night or Wednesday.
The ride up Cadillac actually seemed easier than I remember, maybe because the Masi is lighter than the Raleigh. The low gearing is about the same. However as I expected my legs were very tired. On every uphill they'd hit their limit before my lungs, which isn't typical. So even though I had plenty of energy my legs just would crank. Maybe it would be smarter to go up Cadillac first and then do the 1200ft of climbing around the PLR, ya' think?
You meet some nice people on bikes. One guy came up behind us on our second time around yesterday, said hi, asked about the bike. "Shimano derailleurs?" "Nope, Simplex." "Oh wow! I see now. Cool!" He rode with us for maybe 10 minutes, slowed to our pace uphill, said he was from western Mass. where the hills were much steeper, so this seemed easy. Then he wished us well and sped on ahead.
We hit a new top speed, a shade under 40mph.

Welch Hollow Part Deux
I haven't had much of a chance to ride lately, except for my short commute to work. I decided to give another attempt at riding this old farm road which had foiled me on my Cinelli earlier this summer, but this time with my sidi mtb shoes, eggbeaters and my Kelly with knobbies. I have been scouting it out on the computer using google satellite images to confirm that it actually existed. A distinct line appeared through the trees where the road should be so I set off today to follow it to one of the other roads it was supposed to meet up with. I rode 55 tough miles today.
After 30 miles I reached Welch Hollow Rd. which starts like this

and then this.
I flipped over the handlebars at almost the exact same spot I did last time. Rode some more and almost crashed 3 other times before I gave up and walked the Kelly down to the bottom of the hollow. The "road" was just too steep, too loose and too chunky to ride through clean.
After I got through this impossibly technical section, Welch Hollow rd was an enjoyable, wide single track for about 3 miles. It went through the back of Wickaboxet and hooked up with some old country roads I like to ride.

Well I don't have any great pics to prove it but I had my first ride since early July yesterday and another one today! If the weather holds out I'll get number three tomorrow. Just cruising my usual roads but avoiding some of the hills for now. The bad part is now I have to put up with my but being sore all over again

Cool! i remeber going there on vacation when I was younger. It was a great time. Didnt do any cycling, but we did go snorkeling and saw a ton of neat sea life!

Took a nice ride in the Wisconsin countryside. There was a super cute baby horse when I stopped for a water break.

Rode the ole 1913 Mead Ranger around in the neighborhood this morning for a couple hours....sorry no pics ! I must say, I'm not a single speed person really, so at times it was a workout ! I will be glad when the temps drop down too, this has been a long hot summer....high today 101*F

I gotta start carrying a camera. I came within a foot or two of a HUGE elk buck. He came right out from behind a stand of trees on a blind corner and scared the heck outta me. 8 foot tall w/o counting the rack! He was crossing the road to get to a herd of more elks on the other side. Very cool, but not sure I wanna be that close again to something that powerful and wild....

Got in 25 good miles today but mentally it was bothersome as I kept looking over my shoulder for part of the ride and up the rest of it. Another wildfire is burning above our place and in the hills I love to mountain bike in when the winds are really stiff. Last night it wasn't real close to breaching the ridge line - this afternoon it did. All I could keep thinking about was what it will do for my off road riding next year.

The next day we did the Acadia's Park Loop Road twice.

Yesterday I rode the Masi around the PLR and then up Cadillac Mountain. No pics until Tuesday night or Wednesday.
The ride up Cadillac actually seemed easier than I remember, maybe because the Masi is lighter than the Raleigh. The low gearing is about the same. However as I expected my legs were very tired. On every uphill they'd hit their limit before my lungs, which isn't typical. So even though I had plenty of energy my legs just would crank. Maybe it would be smarter to go up Cadillac first and then do the 1200ft of climbing around the PLR, ya' think?
You meet some nice people on bikes. One guy came up behind us on our second time around yesterday, said hi, asked about the bike. "Shimano derailleurs?" "Nope, Simplex." "Oh wow! I see now. Cool!" He rode with us for maybe 10 minutes, slowed to our pace uphill, said he was from western Mass. where the hills were much steeper, so this seemed easy. Then he wished us well and sped on ahead.
We hit a new top speed, a shade under 40mph.
