Very nice, Sixty Fiver. I want pictures of you carrying them on the bike. I did see you mention it on the utility rides thread.

i picked up this schwinn high sierra today. It's a 6-speed with deore components all around, biopace rings, sealed cartridge bearing hubs, suntour roller cam brakes, bronze colored stem and cool gun metal finish. The gum wall tires hold air but are dry rotted pretty badly. All-in-all it's in pretty good shape. A few nicks here and there.
The head badge is stamped 1197, so i'm assuming it's a 1987 model. As part of the deal i also got a second rack that had some eclipse grocery panniers semi-permanently mounted to it. All for $40.

Those should be sealed cartridge hubs too, I believe? 1988 they went to black rims and hubs, but they look nearly identical to the wheels on mine.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I have been looking forward to being able to build my own pannier bags for a long time and was really happy to find a machine that can handle this level of work... it's American made, has no plastic parts or belts and is a gear driven machine that can easily handle canvas and garment leather as well as doing finer everyday work.
Was also thinking I would whip up some tool bags and could also make my own moose mitts / pogies now as well.

And as promised, here is the last, and I'm sure best of the weekends catches. This 'un cost me five whole pounds, far the most expensive purchase and is, underneath the the filth,a jet black Raleigh. If anyone has an ID on it, however tentative, I'd love to know. Anyway, 501 tubing, or at least the relevant decal, Sakae stem, Wellgo pedals, indexed Sachs Huret shifters, Weinmann brakes, couldn't see a model name on them, rear wheel is a Rigida rim on a Miche hub and skewer, front wheel is Alesa rim on Maillard hub and skewer, Raleigh branded alloy handlebars and Weinmann brake levers, Shame about the bar tape, and thats literally the worst thing on it except for (very) perished Continental tyres. And this was going to the dump. It makes my daily ride, a very tatty Peugeot of about '85 vintage, look distinctly cheap and nasty. Which it isn't, its great fun to ride. Oh, and it has a further decal proclaiming it was originally sold by Rick Green Cycles, lightweight cycle specialists in Handforth.
And frustratingly, its again too big for me.
Damn.

So, I hope this is the right place to ask this, as Ive already posted it here, but I was just offered £60 for the Raleigh in as is condition. Its on Ebay, due to sudden time commitments, has about 14 people watching it at the moment, and someone messaged me offering cash as a buy it now. My gut feeling says it would be a bad idea to take the cash up front, but does anyone have anything further to add?
Seems to me that even parting it out would make the same money ive been offered there.

Whatever it is, that chainguard is probably the most valuable component on that bike.
It's also gorgeous. Nice catch.

I picked up this steel Guerciotti cross frame a few months ago. It came with some of the parts. I'm slowly building it up for next years racing season. The brooks pro wont be staying on the bike, just needed something to put on for fit.
sorry for the crap iphone pics but I havent had time to get proper ones.
all of the pics can be found here
can anyone tell the year or any info by the serial? Wp8006598

Here is my just-home CL find, a nice starter bike for my 13 y o son. It popped up on Chicago CL yesterday for $25. I replied immediately and was apparently first. The guy called me and we agreed on a deal, but by that time I would not have been able to make the 1.5 hr drive out to get the bike then back into town to pick up son from school, so he agreed to keep it until this morning. Then last night he emailed me that he had about 20 more emails and felt he was giving the bike away at $25. I asked him what he thought was fair and pointed to a similar bike on eBay that is attracting no attention at $100. So he suggested $65 and I said fine. This was a bike he'd gotten new when he was 13 and a couple of our bikes have come from original owners like that. In such a situation it's more important to me that everyone be happy with the deal than to get the absolute bottom price. Call it karma or call me a sucker, I know my son is going to be very happy with this:
1985 Fuji Allegro. Needs cleaning and a bit of touch-up, new rubber and cables; will get red bar tape, and a reflector-ectomy. Too bad it isn't an '86 as there were upgrades that year, but oh well!

That is a very beautiful bike, Al! And I have reverse-negotiated before... my current bike was offered to me at $60, but I offered him $200. We settled on $100.

Al - great story. That's the spirit, really. A good price is never bad, but a good deal is one where everyone ends up content. Enjoy riding with you son!
(addition to the thread, here) I had to build one for my 11 yr old son & it's still on the large side of fitting OK.
oh...and sorry for the non-drive side photo...and, no, the fork's not bent!

Way to go Al! I saw that ad when it was listed for $25 and knew it wouldn't last long. That's big of you to offer more, although I do hate it when sellers try to turn craigslist into ebay.
