Thanks again all - Since there seems to be some interest, perhaps I should share a little story about the circumstances underwhich I acquired it:
(The names/physical locations are changed to protect the innocent)...

I answered a CL ad, sans price, sans photo, for a Raleigh. Arranged to meet Bob in the First Bank parking lot, next to the liquor store at the SW corner of Woodward and Seven.
Arrived early. It was raining.
Waited...
Waited...
No show!
Called the number for Bob that was stored on my cel.
Left a message on the machine saying I had waited 30 minutes in the First Bank lot, and wished him good luck selling it.
Started my truck and headed home.
5 minutes later, my phone rang, as I was driving home, empty handed.
It was Bob - His wife intercepted my message on the machine, and told him to call me right away.
Turns out, there were TWO First Bank offices on the SW corner of Woodward and Seven:
Bob had been waiting by the First Bank facing north, I had been waiting by the First Bank facing East, and the liquor store located directly on the corner prevented us from seeing each other.
Anyway, we connected, and he showed me the Raleigh - which was a tad rough, and this second old ten speed, a Moto Grand Jubile, as you see above.
I bought them both for $(You don't want to know).

I want to know....

Thanks BD - I could not agree more - especially given that I was already driving away without not only this bike, but without the Raleigh as well, which turned out to be quite a lovely bike. That one needed a lot of help though ( as described in this prior thread. )

A retired G-man who serviced Sausalito, CA, brought by a Schwinn LeTour and a cheap Maestro bike and asked if I'd sell them for him. The LeTour looked like a quick flip but ended up being a POS. After 60$ worth of store bought parts and some out of my bin, I sold it for $135. I gave him $60 and told him I'd donate the MB. He had brought along a couple more bikes from his 'pile' and asked if I thought I could sell them. I told him I didn't really have the time, but I'd see what I could do. Terry Symetry and a 84' Trek 520. He told me to use the Trek for parts. A ball buster 64cm that sat outside for a bit, but it had greased seat post and stem. Top tube is comfy so it will probably stay awhile...

I can't imagine what your pal was thinking when he suggested using that Trek 520 for parts - Touring Treks are commanding more than the sum of their parts and yours looks to be in pretty good shape. You will enjoy it if it is not too vertically challenging.

I just sold this this bike Monday, so it's not my catch of the day, it's my release of the day. I got it at a benefit rummage sale. Sold it to a college student who will use it as a commuter. She seemed very satisfied. It rides better than it looks, probably because of the National (Panaracer) tires. Gosh, I love that company's tires!

I asked $200. She offered $160, and I accepted.

Boy, she'd better buy a darned good lock for that one noglider. A Univega mixte - all clean and ready to go! Nice.

Yeah, it was quite good looking. Not the greatest components, but Univega really had flair for styling and colors. And it really rode better than I expected.

Yeah, but I was feeling charitable. She's a college student. I think she offered $150 in email, and my response was that I was open minded to negotiation. I paid less than $40 for the bike. What would you have hoped to get? I'm still getting a feel for market values. It has so-called manga-light tubing, whatever that is.

I saw a Tange Mangaloy sticker on a Trek the other day, and I just figured it was a Tange's 531. After seeing your post, I went digging around a bit, and it seems the non-Reynolds MnMo tube sets were intended to be slightly lower end than their CrMo tubes. This page includes tube set weights w/ Mangaloy listed at the bottom and this thread has T-Mar busting out some background on strength and purpose.

AAHHHH, You sold the Univega!! Congrats..Good for you for helping out a college student. I remember those days...Some nights I got so hungry I was tempted to take a bite out of the cinder-block furniture. :lol: In a way it's good for you though...It shows you what you're made of. ;)

Been in the market for an older steel road bike. Didn't need anything fancy, just wanted something fairly inexpensive to take on the Silver Comet for some exercise. I also wanted something unique that would hold its value. After looking for a few weeks, and striking out on several Schwinn, Trek, Cannondale, Bianchi, Specialized, etc., I found a nice little Miyata Five Twelve hiding on Craigslist.

I had some interest in Miyata because I knew they built quality bikes frames. I had some doubt to the claims of late 90s. I searched the internet, most of the hits for the 512 showed 1987-88 or early 90s. Searched the Miyata Catalog pages and was pretty sure it was the 1988 model in white. I called and asked about the components but he wasn't sure. I also figured out it was a 54cm frame. Still thinking it might be too small for me. I went and looked anyway. To my surprise, the bike was in excellent condition for 22 years old. I took it for a little spin, it needed adjusting, so I think he was lying about the 2009 tuneup. The front tire looked pretty old too, so I was doubtful about his new tire claim. I offered $100 and he took it. The bike really didn't feel too small (I'm ~5'11"). It feels similar to my MTB, which is a 19" frame.

Anyway, took it home, cleaned it up a little and found that everything except the seat is original equipment. Even the front tire (yeah, what a liar!). The rear had been changed, but I suspect it was probably at least 10 years ago. Did some adjusting and got everything shifting fine. So, snapped some photos.

1988 Miyata Five Twelve in White/red.
Shimano Light Action SIS 6 speed drivetrain with Biopace crank, SLR Brakes, Sansin sealed hubs, Wolber Super Gentlemen GTA rims, Frame made of spline triple butted Cr-Mo. Mn steel forks (not unicrown!). Sakae Signature bars. Original tape (still in decent shape). Comes in around 24lbs or so.

I'll need new tires, a different saddle, and some SPD pedals, but otherwise, she is ready to go.

Not bad for the price. I've seen some crap go for much higher lately.

Kinda funny, 1988 was the year I graduated from High School. I wish I had aged as well as this bike!

$150-$200 seams to be teh sweet spot for college kids and bikes. You made over $100 profit, so I would say you did well. Keeping you eye on CL in your city as well as the closest bigger city will help give you a feel for pricing as well.

Hmm, so with that manga-light tubing, I undercharged. But it's OK. I'm satisfied with the sale. It's nice someone got such a good and good looking bike.
