Saw this Univega hybrid in my hometown CL. The seller listed it for $50. I emailed 3.5 hours it was posted, thinking someone would surely beat me to it. I got a reply from the seller the next day, saying the bike was still available. I asked my folks to pick it up the following day. When they got there, he told my parents he got the wrong size seatpost, so he offered to sell it cheaper....for $20! Thank goodness my folks accepted!

I can't wait to try the bike out when I get home for the summer!

I think it's a Via De Oro. Any idea what year it was?
Here are two small pictures from the ad.

Got this in trade today. My bike buddy doesn't have internet so I offered to list a bike for him on CL. He gave me this 70s-ish motobecane super mirage and a brand new Giant magnetic trainer. He's moving so he's purge mode... lucky me.

    1990 Giant Rincon

002.jpg003.jpgMy catch on Monday was a 1990 Giant Rincon for $25 off the local CL. Obviously stored in the garage for the past 20+ years, still has its 1991 license sticker. Everything was in adjustment. I just cleaned, lubed and updated with a new saddle and grips and different wheels and tires. Took it for its inaugural ride today, in spite of the snow. Feels like it will become one of my regular rides. Thank you for this thread--you keep me inspired.

Like from the early to mid 90's when Univega was owned by the same company that owned Raleigh.

Found at the Dump today, and I mean the dump. After all, that is what this thread is about, correct...

Old entry level Sekine with a lovely, near new set of SA drum brake hubs - three speed rear and high flange front. Trigger shifter is included and so is the Brooks saddle. Ya just never know what the Dump will cough up next...

Have been pricing out CR18's for my folder as I want to upgrade my wheels from the light duty HP ones I have to something a little more bombproof.

Stopped by one of my favourite shops today to check out their new digs and chat with the mechs and asked about 406 rims.

Came home with some beautiful NOS Rhynolites for less than I would have paid for the CR18's.

And they are giving me two Suntour cog boards w/ cogs and a bunch of other goodies.

    GIVING.

Thrift store find today. Bit neglected and will take a LOT of elbow grease to clean up. The sticker was on the chain stays and it listed PHLE1050. I believe that makes it a 1985 PH 10LE 50cm. The specs match the 1985 catalogs. Original down to the tires and Huret Rival derailleurs.
Hate that the decals are so damaged it otherwise would have cleaned up nice

After an extended dry spell, I picked up a nice 1980 Puch Force XII today. All Reynolds 531 frame and fork, first generation Cyclone (Cyclone GT RD). I really like that first generation Cyclone stuff. I can see it coming off and ending up in my parts bin. I have a variety of other Suntour stuff that can take its place.

Needs the typical cleanup, plus bartape, lever hoods, and a replacement saddle!!! That padded POS must go.

Spent the day at the co-op and helped one of our volunteers with his own catch of the day... someone donated a nearly mint 1985 Apollo Club Tourist in in that wonderful green and silver I am so very fond of.

Was fitted with a Shimano 600 drivetrain with the long cage rear d, 600 pedals, drilled 600 levers with nice hoods, AT50 cantis, and the wheels were Sansin laced 40 / 38 to Araya rims which I hand tuned for him.

The frame was of course lugged and built on Ishiwata quad butted tubes which is good cause the kid is six foot 2 and probably curbs out at a good 250 pounds and needs a stiff and strong frame under him and after a test ride he said those brakes (fitted with Kool Stops) stopped him better than many disc brakes he has used.

Of course... nothing is free but we gave him the student / volunteer / welcome to C&V bicycles discount (the price will make you cry) and figure he should be enjoying this bike for years and years to come.

He really wants to tour and the bike also came with a Jim Blackburn rear touring rack so he is pretty much set up.

I came home with a few goodies... salvaged some battered but completely functional Shimano 8 speed bar end shifters (think they are 105's) and the adjusters as well as a scruffy LX crankset with some decent mismatched rings.

Will use the bar ends on my Moulden and might fit that crankset to it while I build up it's Race Face triple.

My other catch of the day was those Sun Rhynolites and I got one of them built up today... don't think there are many wheels that would be more bombproof than this and it is laced to a Suzue cartridge bearing hub and is rocking a Shimano 600 6 speed block.

Went to the flea market for the first time in many months, and the place was hoppin'! Bikes I spotted, but didn't buy:
    • 60's gold Phillips Sports step through
    • 80's Trek 800 in perfect condition
    • a very nice Fuji Cambridge IV
    • a '68 Schwinn Stingray Runabout (completely spraypainted silver, and the vendor still wanted $180.)

My friend could not resist this Super Sport, it's in great condition and appears to have low mileage. If he didn't take it, I don't know that I would have been able to resist...

I was really tempted by a full oxy-acetlyne rig with a nice cart for $50, but I was a bit relieved that it was gone when I went back. I have enough trouble getting homeowner's insurance as it is I picked up five rolls of self-vulcanizing silicone tape for $1/roll (probably should have taken the entire box...,) some tubes for $1 each, and some NOS canti brake parts. Not a bad day.

I love those brake levers. Do they work with traditional road brakes?

I'd imagine they'll work, they were intended for cantilevers. These are missing the pivot screws and one of the adjusters unfortunately. The guy I bought them from seems to specialize in incomplete components

Yeah, we used it to wrap wiring bundles when I worked on military aircraft. It's good stuff, but crazy expensive... In addition to the colors in the photo, I picked up a roll each of black and clear in 1-3/4" wide, that will be handy if I ever need to fabricate a new radiator hose

Got up this morning and installed those Shimano bar end shifters... they are a little scruffy but so is the bike and the shifting is flawless.

They don't look scruffy compared to the hoods! Jeez man, don't you ever wash that thing?
