Well something else about pre-index Dura Ace is that it's before the early indexed Dura Ace that was only compatible with other Dura Ace.

Couldn't resist this 1992 Stumpjumper SS for $60. I'm not sure what I'll do with it, but figured for the frame and wheels it was worth it. Wish it had the rigid fork though.

So much for crappy deals on CL.
This 1984 23" Raleigh Portage was just hand delivered to my office. He was asking $60. I told him I'd give him $100 if it was in reasonable shape. In the bag are matching period appropriate racks but he mentioned he got them separate from the bike. (I'm not convinced though. A quick eye-fit they looked pretty close to original and match the '84 catalog very closely.)
Almost all original minus the RD. Left brake lever a bit wonky, but the whole bike was good enough to ride the few miles home. Now to open a bottle of wine and start the process.

If that's a 16" (in my dreams), what you should do with it is trade it to me, so I can have yet another pink bicycle of awesome. nice find.

Yeah, ya got burnt, what can I say? Looks like it may have those crappy 650b wheels that nobody wants anymore, too. I'll take 'em off your hands for $60, just so you won't feel too bad.
I kinda got hosed in the vintage Raleigh department today, too. A benji down the drain for an old Technium composite frame with a perfectly true set of nice Mavic rims.
It does have some weird-ass componentry choices; I'm guessing it was some old guy's last gasp at riding a road bike, with the riser stem, stem shifters, big cogs, etc. There, but for the grace of God, go I. I'm halfway there anyway.
I guess I'm just sentimental about bikes made in my backyard.
The sweetener in the deal is the seller also tossed this one in for another $15 (brifters currently not shifting, 8-speed 105 - salvageable?)
Hello there, Alan aluminum fork!
Campy Gamma Strada wheelset, badly in need of polishing, but just as true and solid as the Mavics on the other bike.

Finding out that it's an 18" is even worse - I'm trying to build one of those gravel bikes...and everyone says to go one size up when building one T_T. So far I've found a 16.5" rockhopper, and a 14" stumpjumper. if you're ever looking to trade it, let me know ^_^.

I'm on it!
(But not holding my breath.)
EDIT: Well! It took half a can of WD40, and three days of spray-soak-sit-shift-repeat, but by golly, both levers are working just as Shimano intended. Lucky me.

Cyclist
One thing to keep in mind is the super long top tube on these. Not an issue if you're building it as a more upright tourer, but if you want any kind of aggressive position, you need a small frame.

Huh. What's so weird about that? Sounds like how my bikes are set up.

I'm both glad (trying not to N+1 right now) and sad (what a wonderfully smooth ride) that this is one size too small. Picked it up yesterday, did a quick and dirty rebuild last night. Overhauled the headset, adjusted the BB, wiped everything down, lubed everything, installed new cockpit (all out of fresh cables and these were in decent repair), and fit the racks. One oddity in the racks, the upper hourglass rear rack bosses are not M5 bolts (or M6). So for now they are through-bolted and nutted. Fit is short in the cockpit with these bars, but functional enough to make a pleasant 5mi commute into work this morning.
The ride isn't sprightly, but it is incredibly smooth even on the old Kenda tires and the handling is dead stable and predictable. I can see why this would be great loaded down, wandering slowly up and quickly down mountain passes. XT cantis are impressively powerful stoppers -- even with the old pads. One "whoops" -- low BB + 650B tires == pedal strike if you dip too deep into corners.
A good friend will be riding this on a 25mi tour of Colorado's vineyards this weekend. If she digs it, I will know its always a good home. Else I'll regretfully have to part with it.

scored this late 90's Terry Symmetry for my wife, i've been looking for a Terry for quite awhile, my wife is 5'1" with short legs. She makes do with her panasonic sport mixte, she actually prefers the panasonic over the Raleigh hybrid she has. Hopefully she likes this one, its got a bunch of miles on it, full 105 drivetrain, RSX brifters and hubs, Tektro dual pivot brakes.
Champion of the Low End
Nothing to get truly excited about, but an 80s Schwinn Sierra that's clearly been left outside. I expected to harvest the cranks, Light Action SIS shifter and long cage derailleur to convert a friend's road bike into a DIY gravel grinder. But since the wheels appear to be salvageable, I may actually look into getting this thing running for its own sake. Definitely needs some Evaporust and a ton of elbow grease.

An apparently all-original 1955 Schwinn Traveler came along with a batch of donated bikes, mostly department store stuff. I took it home and cleaned it up and hope to sell it to fund supplies for our "earn-a-bike" program.
The bike looked like it had been ridden for a year or so, then stuck in the back of the garage for the next 60 years. Lots of caked-on grime and surface rust that cleaned up with a little elbow grease. As it first came home (all I'd done at this point was clean off the rear hub to find the date code -- 10 54 -- and remove the wheels to get it in the car:
Rims before and after aluminum foil/vinegar/elbow grease:
After clean-up. Dynamo and head/tail /lights still work. Literally the only thing I replaced was the rim strip in the front wheel and the dried up grease in the bottom bracket, headset, and front hub. Everything else is as-found. Tires still intact and tubes holding air:
Locking steer tube with original Arnold, Schwinn & Co. key. Curiously, the key can only be removed when the steer tube is locked!
