Thanks Marley, it is different. I was going to flip it, but these are getting hard to find. The Kestrel is awesome to ride.

Thanks Devine, the binder bolt is actually just a hex head screw that goes straight in to the post. I'll get a shot of it this evening and post it. The calipers are not the best, but I like that they are not something you normally see anymore.

Here's a shot of the binder bolt. I'm kind of anxious to ride this. Pretty neat stuff the closer I look at it. I would like to see some literature on it, but haven't even found a catalog that it is in.

That's pretty cool looking bike, I once ran into a Lotus that had a similar appearance, how similar I can't tell since it was long time ago when I saw it, but similar in my memory. I think the Lotus was the British made version not the Japanese one.

It looks like very late seventies to early eighties graphics on the frame. I can honestly say I NEVER knew Moto built anything like that! The frame is rockin, but the color doesn't do anything for me. No matter, it's too cool for words nonetheless. Can't wait to see it all done up.,,,,BD

Nice find on the 912. Check out the "Miyata Cult" thread for some more recent 912 action.

A rack and fenders? That's a racing bike man! You must reduce weight and go fast!

Thanks, I've noticed that its a racing bike! I've ridden it a few times now and it feels more like flying than cycling, I love it.
I was already having second thoughts about the rack and fenders and wondering how much a new paint job would cost instead (in the 1981 orange color). The paint wasn't as good as I thought at first, quite some scars showed up when I cleaned it.

The bike is probably an "1982 model", judging by the components, although the frame has an 1981 serial.

I've already scrolled the "Miyata Cult" thread and I'll post pictures of mine when I have something to show.

Have you started taking the reflective tape off it yet? I have a project with this same tape in yellow on it that I need to take off as well and was wondering how it was working out.

Finally a real "Save" from the dump. Drove to work and parked by a pickup piled up with bikes and strapped down. Five or six in total and about three deep was this Fuji. Haven't looked at serials or catalogs, but likely mid seventies. I put a post it note with my phone number and an offer of $10 for the Fuji. He called later after had had taken the other four of five bikes straight to the landfill, not even the scrapyard. Broke my heart. There was nothing else I really wanted in there but plenty of good parts for flippers and a couple of decent front shocks as well. Saved one at least.

trlrnr- I started to work on the tape and it is a pain. It must be pretty old becuase it is not coming off in any type of pieces, more like just flaking off. It will be one of those jobs that tests my patience. I'm going to try some Goo-Gone to see if that might soften it up a bit.

Bikedued- The rarity of the frame is why I picked it up (not to mention the price was right). You just do not come across these every day. I do not think it is worth a fortune, but it will be great on the rack at home. I'll get it cleaned up soon.

Good luck with the tape. I was thinking of soaking a rag with something and soaking it for a day or two before trying to peel it off.

Heat gun.

It's the only way to take off decals IMHO. Don't attempt if you are too dim to sneak up on the heat instead of just blasting it at full-hot setting.

The heat gun is pretty good at removing paint too if you let it get THAT hot.

Those aero Motobecanes are unusual bikes.
One passed through my hands last year, the unusual aero frame was unbelievably heavy though.

That AX groupset will clean up beautifully. Brake pads are near impossible to find, search online, I believe people have to make them up by shaving down full size pads.

+1
I have removed a lot of this tape and the heat gun did the best job ( still a pain ) then followed up by some Goo B Gone as it will leave the sticky side on the frame in a bunch of spots.

Some of you may have noticed me posting that I had found an old bike shop that has been closed for years. Well, I finally got a chance to go back today, and helped him organize and clean up the shop a little. He paid me in parts, and at the end of the two hours he says "Well, what do I owe you?" I picked out something and he says "Done deal." My payment.... NOS in the package, never opened... Suntour Bar end shifters! Complete with the cables, housings, etc. The card in the package says "Handle Barend control lever" Obviously bad Japanese to English translation at it's best.

Now I just have to find something worthy of NOS Barcons. A wonderful problem to have! BTW, the original price tag says $29.99 in faded handwritten numbers.,,,,BD

I have to remember to call you when I need my house painted, that should be worth the NOS Positron derailleur I've been hanging onto for a few years.

Two hours of labor in an air conditioned shop isn't worth a set of NOS barcons? I might would paint a house for a couple of NOS 70's Italian road bikes of decent quality. Nothing Positron is worth lifting a finger, JMHO.,,,,BD

Saved this hybrid looking thing from the Garbage today! I think it looks pretty sweet. It has been spray painted over what appears to be Celeste colored paint. But it has all Shimano brakes and derailleurs. It has Scott handlebars. Any ideas what this is?

I used a household steam cleaner and had good luck. The tape peeled with ease and I was able to rub off the residue.

The mtb looks very Miyata-esque to me, especially with the spare spoke holder/chain protector braze on, and front rack mounts. If it's not, it's very decent either way.,,,,BD
