1987 Cannondale SM800 for $60 from a trade place selling BSO's for $100. Most of the parts are pretty beat up and the original wheels were changed from QR to bolts for some reason, but the frame itself seems to have only minor scrapes and some scuffing where there was a kickstand. I've always wanted a Cannondale MTB, a bike with rollercams, and I don't want to ship any more bikes across country. Also, it is 5 speed indexing. Weird.

Sorry for the non-drive side photo. The other side is no great shakes atm.

I've been following a Raleigh on CL for a couple of months now (see the "Calling a Raleigh Expert" thread). Well the seller eventually dropped his price to something worth talking about - I made an offer and he accepted.
I bought a lady's Sports from him in January. It was made for the Belgian market evidently, so it was outfitted a bit differently than what I have seen in catalog scans. The one I picked up today is a Belgian model also - a Raleigh Royale. Here it is.

And here are more:

Notice the BSA forks and the lock in the last photo. The shop's name is on the fender - Alain Mertens, I wonder if they are still in business? The serial number is on the left side of the seat tube near the top - MG17365.

It has Huret derailleurs (Svelto RD) and axle wingnuts, A Brooks B-17 in great condition, stainless (inoxiodable) fenders, Normandy hubs, Dansi headlight, and French 622 tires on steel rims(can't find a brand name on either yet).

The stem and bars are steel, steel Raleigh brake calipers with alloy levers, original looking Raleigh grips, and an ESGE rear rack. The dynamo is missing and the wiring has been cut sometime in the past. I have no problem re-wiring things, but the only dynamo I have is a Chinese model I bought at a bike swap for $3.00 a couple of years ago. I don't have a problem using it, but a Miller would be nice.

I can't wait to get this thing cleaned up, at least superficially. The paint looks to be mainly OK.

One thing that I just don't understand is that the chain rings have a guard, but the frame has braze-ons for a chain guard. Why would both be on the bike - belt and suspenders?

I think that i am moving to collecting older and crappier bikes. Is that a sign of insanity?

Two possibilities, the crankset was replaced at some point or more likely it shared frames with a model that used a full chainguard like a 5 speed with no FD. Pretty common back in the 60's and 70's, sometimes the same model was available with a 5 or 10 speed option.

Picked up this cosmetically challenged (to put it politely) Lemond Zurich a day or two ago. Came really cheap as the seller was convinced the shifters and RD were bodged beyond saving (the former need two squirts of WD40 and the latter needed one of those little outside washers on one of the pulley wheels). Also, exploded rear tire. About 40 minutes of shop time got everything all snickety-snick again with stuff I had on hand. Since it's so much smaller than my regular rides, I bought it assuming I'd part it out and eBay the frame, but with the setback seatpost maxed out and the longish stem it *almost* fits. Hmmm... I've been looking for high end frame for a painting project...

Nope. I'd better get this frame over to the FS thread before I actually jump into that. But hey, that 853 Reynolds is tasty stuff

The paint looks much worse in person.

I found an instructional video about the lock. It has no info about removing from the brazed-on mount, and it appears to be in German. But here it is...

RE: Zurich

those make wonderful beaters...except that I managed to pull the rear wheel out of my Zurich at speed & do a 30 mph roll on asphalt a few days ago...though, hey, 1. the Zurich is fine & 2. it's not really the frame's fault. Great riding bike!

Ouch! Tighten those skewers. Glad you're still here to tell about. And it's funny you should mention that, as the first ride I took on mine, the cheap, non-stock rear skewer worked loose. Upon examination, the curved plastic part of the tightening mechanism was damaged and thus requires much higher than usual force to close securely. With vertical dropouts, you don't always get warning until it's too late.

yes, i am quite lucky and I have since that point experienced only what I would refer to as "luxury problems" . None of them have much to do with the Zurich frame, which is great. Until last week, I did not really know such a failure was possible, though I've had semi-horizontal dropout bikes slip rear wheels a bit.

Went with my dad to a local swap. I didn't take any money on purpose(Need to somehow try and stop the N+1 thing haha). I had to borrow $50 bucks from dad, I just couldn't leave this one there at that price

@guzziee - nice score! I paid $75 for my 520, and I thought that was a good deal. Yours looks to be in better shape than mine was. You can even read the model number on the chainstay protector.

I was parked on the side of the road eating a sandwich, two blocks from the recycling facility when a scraper truck pulls up right next to me at the light. $20 later.......
