i probably could have negotiated DOWN from $20...but i was in a hurry.
she was mud caked and non descript.
i hosed her off and this is what i found.
(the chain is off because i had to take the rear tire off to get her in the truck)
I can't believe her Dunlop tires look brand new and hold air.
a few hours on the bike stand and she will purr.
i'm starting to think all bikes should be black.

What if I told you that you could clean those rims with about 30 minutes of actual labor, a $10 big plastic tub, a battery charger or old computer power supply, box of Arm and hammer washing powder and a tooth brush.....

The vintage bike god has been kind to me this week. I usually find a bike every couple weeks but the last 3 days I have managed to land 6 bikes and 3 are touring bikes. 
Hit my local Thrift store about 11am and other then some junk low end box store steel rim MTB they were dry. I didn't have time to do yard sales as I wanted to get cleaning on the Trek and Raleigh I picked up Thursday night. So on the way home I notice the lady that lives around the corner from m is having another yard sale (I think she hits estate sales and makes offers on the whole deal).
As I am coming up I see a very tall silver drop bar bike. I try not to look too interested and brows a little. She hasn't prices anything. I take a look at the bike. It is Fuji Touring III about 25 inch frame. Surface rust on the frame everywhere water would settle like under the cables like the paint hasn't sealed the steel but all the hardware is nearly rust free Don't really get it. It has enough rust that I will have to sand down or sand blase or electrolysis the complete frame but the hardware is excellent. Somebody has installed a goofy tall MTB stem and a different seat that is surprisingly comfee but other then that it is all original. Now get this, it has a 48 spoke rear wheel that is threaded on both sides of the hub....Never saw anything like that. It has a Specialized hub and the rims are matched pair of Ukai but the front is a 36 spoke not a 48 like the rear. I hope I spin off the free hub and find this thing will take a fixed cog. The open side is just threaded, no lock ring.
So I go an offer her $5. She counters with "$8". I counter with "Sold"!
As I am digging in my wallet I have only a $20 and I look up and notice behind her is a Trek 950 MTB. "How much?" "$10" "hell I'll take it becasue my buddy needs the wheels". Turns out the rear axle is broke and the LBS got me $10 on that LOL. Buddy will give me $40 for the wheels he said if I swap the free hub off his GT onto the back and mount the tires. The Cranks will either fix the Proflex I have or get swapped onto one of the wife's bike with the thumb shifters and 7 speed free hub(more likely). Frame will hit CL.
So I get them home fill the tires on the Fuji and she rides like a dream.
I tinker till it is time to go shower and dress, load up the family to go meet my mother for fathers day (her treat). On the way to moms I drive past the drop off area at the Thrift store and there is a Schwinn and a Chestnut dove bar bike that looks like a old Raleigh or something with a three speed hub. Run in the store to see if anything else had shown up and see if the Manager was free to price the bikes still on the loading dock. Nothing but the junk MTB inside. Manager was busy and I was out of time and had to go pick up mom. I went and had a nice steak at O' Charlies with mom and wife and kid.

Hit a lot of sales this weekend and did not find much. Here is a nice part off of a freebie. This was on a 70's era Schwinn Breeze ladies frame, with a 20" BMX wheel in the back....

Lucky me. Niagara had Brooks B-17 Narrow saddles on sale last month for $55, so when I placed my order, I picked up two. Well, it took three weeks to receive the order due to bulk packaged road brake cables being out of stock, but everything came as ordered the other day and now I have two shiny new Brooks to break in.

Very Nice indeed,I have been too busy repairing flippers the last couple of weeks to go yard sailing and the weather has been unkind anyway but the wife has been out looking and came home with a nice ladies Armstrong with a SA three speed good chrome needs tires,and a National 10 speed that is good for parts,$2 each down from $10.
As I was looking at that Fuji above one of the things I have been looking for that was on that bike is a chain with Gold side plates for my Concord Pacer S/S project that I am running a gold Suntour Freewheel and the decals are also gold so it would be a great look if I could find a chain with the Gold side plates to match,I have searched ebay and a few of the better online bike stores and all I can find are singlespeed 1/8" chains,I did get a nice Campy 9sp chain for $20 but it has silver plates anybody know where I could find something like that or have one with atleast 116 drive links we could barter for.
After posting I found a chain 116L with gold plates for $17.00 total on ebay this will get me by but I would like to find something of better quality for under $35.00 if I could good used is not out of the question.

Looks like 2 water bottle cages, "one above" and "one below" on the the down tube. That bar end mounted mirror is pretty nice to have when commuting or touring. Triple chain ring! What's that below the DT shifters? Tire levers??

It may be a dirt drop. Have to pull it out to find a brand. It has a hole for a brake cable to pass through.
Parking brake is the doohickey under the shifters. It flips down wedges the front tire to keep the bars from turning and lock the wheel.

Cool site! thanks for the link. According the Serial number guide on that site it dates as a 84. The Suntour Mountech Derailers were ZG and ZH build dates So this was a very early 84 model. That is light for a steel frame. My T700 is about the same and it is all aluminum with the frame being about 4.3 lb. Wish the paint had been better. Think this will be my tinker bike instead of a flip. Picked up some sand for the blasters today. If I can get the rest of the bikes on CL this week maybe I can work on it next weekend and get it in paint. I think it will get repainted a deep metallic green like the 2008's had with a Cream or gold colored head tube. See if my buddy can make me some Touring III decals in a gold. Something like this:

Now it just so happens I came up with a thread on 7 speed Suntour freewheel on that Trek 950. I have some 7speed bar ends in a box but they need to go on the 95 T700 if I sell it.
I'm still tripped out about that 48 spoke rear wheel.
Must have been an upgrade for the big daddy bikes for Clydesdales like this one.

I just picked up this old Nishiki off Craigslist which seems to have fared pretty well for being stored outside in Florida. I think it will be ok once I clean it up and replace the seat. I think its an 83..? It has all the original Suntour and Dia-Compe parts on it. Unfortunately the front brake seems to be bent . Not much rust but the paint is flaking off in some spots.

Picked up this '83 Fuji Opus III this weekend. Beautiful condition, though the original wheels, derailleurs and shifters are gone. Not sure why the catalog lists it as 58cm; I'm measuring the frame as 56.5cm square. Yeah, I know, center to top, but it's got much shorter top tube than most 58cm frames I've encountered.

I just picked this up at a yard sale. It's a Leader LE60700 6 speed shimano geared city/cruiser bike.
I think it's a 19-20 inch frame.
I have no idea what year but I'm guessing early 80's? It came with the rack and fenders already on it.
Everything is made of steel. It has a friction thumbshifter and and the gears work perfectly. I think it basically sat in the woman's basement for years collecting dust. I am going to polish up the chrome on the fenders and the rims.
Sorry for the crappy pic but the camera's sensor is dying.
