That NOS Schwinn Paramount just sold on eBay

...i.e., the one that was posted on Craigslist a few weeks back.

https://cgi.ebay.com/1971-Schwinn-Par...QQcmdZViewItem

$2,200, met reserve (I gather the reserve was $2,000). Can't say that I'm surprised or not surprised. Surprising as it does not seem much more then I've very rarely seen excellent used chromies go for - I would have expected to bring more - but perhaps not surprising in the fact that it had that suspicious Cinelli saddle on it. Who knows.

I bet the jerk who was selling it (search earlier posts - he fished around previously) is displeased that it didn't make anything close to his $3,450 BIN

I saw that thing on eBay just a few days ago. Pretty darn nice. I was surprised about the saddle too, though. Cinelli? Did Paramounts ever come with those?

Weird that he wouldn't try to at least put a Brooks on there to sell it with.

If I recall right, the general consensus was that the Brooks was pilfered from it, early in its existence.

Seller didn't seem to care one way or the other, at least, that's what I heard through the grapevine.

That's a lot of $$$. Frankly, once it got to $1,800 and hadn't made the reserve, I didn't think it would sell.

The first thing I'd do is deep six that crappy Gran Turismo RD, and the second thing I'd do is put a new Brooks Professional saddle on it.

+1 plus I'd '86 the suicide levers/turkey wings. Maybe put some Campy brake levers on instead.

That's another thing that kept it from looking excellent (besides the handlebar position). Not that the seller would probably have wished to get into the mess of swapping them out, though this solution w/Weinmann hoods (also a stock option, IIRC) would have suited it well:

There is no question that the condition is nice, but does anyone believe that it was really never ridden, not even once? Too bad about the little rust starting under the decals, is there anyway to clean that without taking them off?

This guy really yanked everyone around trying to drum up interest.

I know he claims it is NOS, but Kurt I think yours look better and I bet you didn't pay this much either. I hope it went to someone who cares as much about it as you do for yours.

I'm inclined to believe it. One would have had to clean the chainrings and freewheel afterward, and it does not look as if the crankset dustcap has had any damage from removal (to take the crankset off - can't get it as clean as in the auction without taking the rings - including the granny - off).

I have no idea, though I could not help but think that whoever bought themselves an NOS machine also inherited themselves a tricky NOS problem.

Much appreciated, and no, mine was not even close in price. $350 as I got it + about $500 put into it to get it back to stock.

I'll say one thing though - the machine in the auction could easily become 10 times more palatable with a simple handlebar and saddle adjustment. Red bar tape would help too, but even I couldn't get myself to un-wrap that crappy NOS Hunt-Wilde black tape. As for the turkey wings...well, that's a different story

That "suspicious Cinelli saddle" may not have been OEM, but it's a quilted Unicanitor, and in that condition worth a pile of money, all by it's lone self.

Thats the first thing I thought!!! It never ceases to amaze me at how poorly most of the CL/Ebay bikes are presented.

In regards to the NOS comments. Absolutely....At the old dealer I worked at we would order extras of the truely special bikes and leave them in the basement which had ideal climatic conditions for bike storage.

I didn't want it, but my 71 P 13 cleaned up at least as well as that one, minus decals.

I did get a really fine gallery of NOS Paramount pictures from that auction for future reference, though!

so...who here has a 70th anniversary set up in the box in their garage, waiting 35 years so that they can eBay it?

I'm not calling the seller a liar, as it certainly looks NOS, and every little thing is exactly right, but how in the heck does this happen?

I think it's the same guy who also has what he claims is a NOS '77 or '78 Schwinn Volare in the same or close to same frame size. I've seen the pics and it's a beauty!

Same guy. I asked him 3 times how much and he would never respond. He just wanted to know how much they were worth. Over and over and over.

Easy....the owner of shop 'put it away' and died or sold the shop or whatever. The owner of the shop I worked at ordered a 50th anniversary in red w/ gold. We never opened the box, it went straight ot the basement. Same thing with our Grateful Dead Hoo Koo E Koo.

Is there a chance the Cinelli seat is OEM? Both the Ebay bike and the bike in post #14 have the same seat. It seems like to much of a coincidence.

I left that shop 12 years ago and the owner sold out 3 years ago so who knows where it is. IIRC we sold 2 or 3 over the counter, possibly 1 red and 1 black or 2 reds and 1 black. Regardless, I dont remember any of them being built up. One guy opened his box in the showroom, we ooo'd and aww'd and sealed the box back up.

I'm not one to spend alot of money on bikes but if I were to come across a mint 54 I'd seriously consider droppping some C-notes.
