"Selecta" Crank Pedal Threads

While attempting (unsuccessfully) to remove the drive-side pedal from a Shimano "Selecta" crank set I noticed the letter "R" embossed on the inside surface of the non-drive-side crank, near the pedal threads, and a letter "L" on the drive-side crank. Sure enough, the pedal threading on these cranks is reversed from what I thought was a universal convention. The drive-side pedal threads are left-hand and the non-drive-side pedal threads are right-hand.

Probably a useless bit of trivia, as there weren't too many bikes equipped with these cranks, but if you have one the info may be of some help.

Regards,
Bob P.

Aren't all pedals like this? Am I missing something?

Well, no. Have another look at the Sheldon link you referenced: "The right pedal has a normal thread, but the left pedal has a left (reverse) thread."

Sure sounds like someone cross threaded the pedals. See if the crank arms are stripped out when you get the pedals off.

Selecta cranks can be interchanged between sides, independent of the spider, giving reversed threads. Somebody put them back on the wrong side the last time the cranks were removed.
