New bike for the new year... Masi Team 3V

Well, I finished one of my projects. This one started with the frameset while I slowly accumulated parts for it. My favorite part is the wheelset; a pair of NOS Chorus hubs with NOS Mavic GP4 tubular rims, built by the Freewheel bike shop here in SF. The frame is, to the best of my knowledge, a 1991 based on the little bit of research I did, including a previous thread on this forum. Components are a mix of Chorus/Athena and Record. It sure is a nice ride. On with the pictures:

(matchy matchy!)

Looks like a well set up bike with a good mix of Campagnolo parts. My favorites are the old Chorus brake callipers; I just love their shape. Perhaps they were not called Chorus in later years though. The yellow Benotto bar tape and Turbo saddle set the bike off nicely.

That is one gorgeous build! Your color coordination between the frame, rim decals, saddle, bar tape and pedals is perfect. The whole bike really seems very "put together" and professional.

I'm currently e-collecting parts for a future build including those same brakes and would love to hear how well they work, along with those shifters.

Congratulations on a wonderful bike, I know those SF hills will make it a workhorse!

What's that ridge on the downtube - just below the lug?

Thanks guys! I'm really proud of this one. It is a bit stiffer and lighter than my '93 colnago super and climbs really well.

USAZorro: the ridge is part of the cast internal lugs. The oversize tubing slips over the lug. Pretty cool design.

I have those brakes on my Bill Holland, and they're my favorite vintage-era non-dual-pivots. Which is saying something, since I like my Dura Ace 7400 bike a lot.

Ditto the mad build props.

I will take that as a serious question. That is the external end of the lug the tube stops there, and there are internal webs of lug inside the tube. There are some images of an unbuilt lug set on the Masi Italy pages of the classicrendezvous site. A cool idea, reintroduced oversized tubes to a 1" and 1.125" world.

Handsome build up, I think they nick named that color purple people eater.

I have a 3V, and I like it quite a bit. But those who have read my posts over time know I appreciate the mark.

That was a serious question. I was trying to figure out how the lugs went on this one, and all I could determine was that this wasn't the conventional means of lugging. I've led a bit of a sheltered life, and don't recall noticing anything with internal lugs previously. Having been completely away from bicycles during the 1990's (I seriously don't think I rode even 1 km during the decade), it's almost like those years didn't really happen.

fwiw - I like the color scheme and the lines/look in general, but am not a huge fan of the OS tubing or the "Power Bar" graphic - not that it should mean anything to anyone else. I'm sure there will be some folks who won't like what I'm doing to my next personal project bike, so I'm going to take the opportunity to practice expressing contrary tastes in a civil manner.

Not a big fan of OS either, but the early 3V's in particular are cool, in a non-traditional way. Some were apparently built with extra-cool Excell tubing. With both the Prestige and the 3V, Masi emerged from the 60's straight into the 80's and 90's. They were thinking ahead and outside the box, and not just in Madison Avenue kinds of ways, though that may have been part of it.

You can't see the internal lugs - they're internal (kidding).

That's a really beautiful bike. I hope I don't seem like a negative nit-picker,but only the very ends of the handlebar plugs should show...there should be tape over the rest...It sort of spoils your build a bit....
