Snagged another Rossin
Just won it with a $400 bid. I didn't actually think I'd win it. '88 Rossin SL with full Chorus, tubulars, extra set of wheels, crankset and a bunch of misc parts. Needs some tlc but a solid ride. Frame will be going to Airglow to bring it back to new after I ride it once.

Nice score. I have that gruppo on my Raleigh USA Team Pro. It works really well when you get it dialed in. I have not been able to locate aftermarket or OEM hoods for the levers. Set of gum hoods would be nice. Lp

I'm envious. Like Old Fat Guy, I'm completely in love with my Rossin - and additional ones are about the only new stuff I'm considering adding to the collection in the coming year.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

In my opinion that bike is not even close to needing a repaint.

Your underside of the bottom bracket is worse than mine, can probably justify a touch up. The 'damage' on the seat stays - that's just pressure sensitive decals. Mine's in the same condition. One of these days I'll get around to getting one of those Rossin decal kits and just replace the damaged pieces, once I've used some light polishing compound on the paint.
Your forks are less scratched than mine.
Overall, don't bother repainting. You'll have one hell of a time duplicating that fade between the colors.

Clean the BB, and seal it with clear nail polish (you can try a touch-up and microfinishing compound to blend it, but it'll never hold up too well).
As for the stays - Syke is correct - decal problems, not paint.
You'll never get the grid pattern to look right if you re-do it, and it'll scream "REPAINT" afterwards (and whether you like it or not, folks will remark about the repaint when you're not in earshot).

i would just touch up the BB and leave it alone.
the motta i have is origianl paint i guess. some chips here and there and touch ups on the top tube braze ons because of corrosion. all the other scratches are just character. plus the paint has a great hazing (cracking) to it now and i like that...like an old well played fender.
don't repaint it.

I got it in time today to throw it together, quick tune and went for a 30 minute spin. What an awesome ride for $500. Pure race bike. The Chorus group is beautiful. Looks like I can get away with painting the rear half of the frame white myself (any tips?). The rest is fine. Just ordered a Columbus SL decal and a full Rossin set that is almost exactly what is on it now from ebay. The current decals aren't clear coated so my heat gun will get them off.

I like a bike that looks like it's been ridden. Trying to paint just the back half sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, unless you're an experienced painter.
I'm having touch-up remorse just from trying to match some chips from a champagne-gold Rauler that was already repainted when I got it. I wish that I'd just left it alone, and covered the chips with clear fingernail polish. I've tried about five different colors, and none quite match. I may take it to an auto body shop and see if they can help me out.
Of course, it's absolutely your bike and you can do what you like. Just remember that it's only original once, and you can't undo paint very easily.

Not even something that should be remotely considered.
Clear-coated decals do not peel off like that - they're over-the-top.
If you want to repaint one, why not start with an example that is in far more need of care?

I've re-assessed the situation and I'm going to listen to you guys and just touch up the white paint. I may try to wet sand around all the scrapes after the decals are removed to smooth it out.

It would be great if you could post a report on the decal set when you receive it. I've been considering doing the exact same thing with my Rossin and replacing the pieces I don't like.
