Birthday travlr 3sp rebuild

I picked up this bike

a while ago from a guy who listed it on ebay as a travlr. no one saw it or cared, I bid $1 and won. I proceeded to drive 3 miles and pick it up. so I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Miraculously, I had just given a very good buddy a matching gents travlr

(I threw new cables and gave it a solid once over, he was just going to ride it to the bar anyway.)

for his birthday and his wife commented "that's the kind of bike I want!" she had a magna POS- his a full XTR Truth,

and some crazy ass 10sp carbon Campy cannondale.

So here comes her birthday(these guys are such dirt hippies it's ridiculous) and I was going to give her the matching bike-with the real fenders and the full g-funk love-She'd ride it to the Farmers Market, All her volvo driving DH friends would Shat thmselves, no biggie, I was into it for like $3.

Anyway, I got a bit carried away.

completely stripped the bike, oxalic acid bath (schwinn chrome..), parted out the wheels, and treated the SA to some Hot water and Dawn love.

Right now I'm over-committed,

but I think this bike, and my buddy's jealousy of his ladies ride, are worth it. I'll post up some more pics as this comes together. So my question for now is: what was that site with the re-make weinman gold dot levers for $12.00?

Nice birthday present! Are you restringing the wheels with stainless spokes?

If one of my friends put that much effort into a bday present for my wife, I'd be watching him pretty closely.

A Dirt Hippie is a person who lives in a yurt, maybe in a commune, rarely bathes, grows everything on their own, doesn't own a car, and doesn't have a job. However as a friendly yet derogatory term a dirt hippie is someone who is a Vegetarian, however they eat organic chicken, turkey and fish from whole foods. drives a prius or volvo, and chooses the environmental demonstrationist lifestyle as a fashion accessory. However, secretly their 401k from the solar company they work for is heavily invested in Chevron and Halliburton.

Those Aren't the brake levers I'm looking for. weinmann or dia compe is making remakes of the levers that were originally spec'd on the bike.

I think I'll re-use the original spokes with new nipples, My stash of DT's is running low and I prefer to use them for Chris king's and Mavic 819's they were fairly straight, just a bit rusty and, in my experience, the SA hub really responds well to a good flush.

These guys are our really good friends. I have no plans of banging his wife, although she might want to bang me after she gets it.

Tomorrow eve I plan on getting most of the bike re-assembled.

Haw! Got it. That's a great term. I will use it.

I've always thought yurts were kind of cool, but then again, a burglar can break into them with a box cutter.

Of course, this brings us to the next term:

Yurt burglar - one who seeks to gain unlawful entrance to dirt hippies' homes. Usually rides a Schwinn Traveler because a Prius is too hard to steal.

My wife's friend has a 1954 ladies Traveler that I have been reworking in stages. First stage last summer was to get it working. Rebuilt the headset and front wheel, tested the tires, trued the rims, and set up the bars/saddle for her. I needed one brake lever, so I bought a set of Schwinn Weinemann Red Dot on Ebay.

I had some trouble starting to clean the paint - the winged ornaments on the down tube wipe away easily.

So far I'm leaving them alone.

Next step is to take the bike back, clean the drivetrain and rebuild the BB, also start soem oxalic treatments on the chrome.

these bikes define slow stable handling!
