Help Sourcing Parts - GB Brakes
Hello,
I'm new here. I have recently acquired, from an old friend who has passed, a Clyde (Dagenham, UK) lightweight, single speed, bike. I believe that my friend may have had this bike from new. From the brake components (GB Hiduminium side pull) I believe the bike to be late 40's. Wheels are Mavic, Atom hubs, Lytallow chainwheel and cranks, Brooks seat. I am in the process of cleaning this bike up to ride. The front wheel was somewhat bent and I have had that rectified to usable condition. The pivot bolt (does it have an official name?) for the front brakes is buggered and before I undertake to turn a new on on the lathe I would like to see if I can't find a replacement from someones spares bin. If breaking a complete brake assembly is unthinkable then I would certainly look at buying the whole thing - I need the proper nuts and washers anyway.
Can anyone suggest where I might find such an item?

John, can you post a picture of the brake bolt you're looking for? I have a couple of cast-off GB brakes in the parts bin that might work depending on the configuration, spring placement, etc.

I just rebuilt a set of GB Coureur brakes, as the threads were foofed beyond repair. I used modern brake axles; the difference in diameter was accounted for by the nylon washer in the middle. I had to file the groove that holds the spring to widen it a little to accommodate the original spring, but otherwise it was a good fit. I stole the axles from a modern cheap Taiwan sidepull brakeset that incidentally was long enough for hexnuts instead of recessed allen bolts. I also compared some Weinmann 500g axles; they seemed to be completely adequate as well...but I decided I'd rather sacrifice the cheap modern calipers. Because there were no markings on the original, and no markings on the replacements, the match on the bike is nearly perfect.
Just that the chrome on the new parts is perfect...

Sorry, John, but both GB brake bolts that I have are shorter. One looks actually to be just a regular bolt that threads through the flange that holds the spring, and it's a nasty looking thing. Hopefully, someone else here can help you out or you can go with luker's solution and make your own patina!
