1985 miyata 310 questions
I'm in the market for a vintage bike and have come across a minty 1985 miyata 310, with full 105. I haven't actually gone to see the bike yet I'm just talking online. The guy says it's one of the better japanese manufactured road bikes with triple butted tubes and full 105. will this be indexed? He's asking $380.00 cdn does this seem in the ballpark price wise? Anyone have one ?

He is right about Miyata making nice bikes. I sold a lesser Miyata (210) and thought it was fantastic. I think his price is a little steep, I would guess 250.00 would be fair if the condition was great. I am no Miyata expert though, check out miyatacatalogs.com for the 1985 Miyata catalog.

Just looked at the catalog myself... Looks to be a very nice bike indeed.

Probably not indexed. Dura-Ace was indexed in '85 but I don't think 600, 105, et.al. were indexed until '86. $380 does sound high.

a nice bike, but too pricey. as mkeller said, it should be more like 250 tops if you ever plan to resell it for the price you paid. if you are patient you can find them for around 100 but if it's a great fit and you love it, offer him 300 and let him decide. it probably won't sell for 380 when you could buy a more modern used bike with 105 for a few dollars more. There was a top end Miyata on my local CL with full 600 (ultegra level) for 150 and nobody bought it for a few months, so they are out there.

Price is too high. I just paid $100 for a 712 (much higher model), but it will need the typical neglect cleanup, tires, etc.
+1 1985 310 was not indexed. This model did not go indexed til 1987, and then it was a model 312.
+1 Miyata is at or near the best of the Japanese made bikes.

A few things to keep in mind....
It has 27" verus 700c's
It has relatively 'tight' geometry as its grouped with the 7 and 9 series.
The rear stays and fork are hi-tensile steel NOT chromoly.
In the Tampa market thats a $150 bike at best. Your market conditions may vary.

In the right lane
It's $380 Canadian which puts it at about $320 US.
I saw Miyata on eBay sell recently for over $700 although it seemed to have lots of upgrades.

I can't imagine a 310 selling for $700, or $320 for that matter.

A 1000 is a whole different matter, and would probably garner $700. Comparing these two Miyatas is kind of like comparing a Chevy Impala to a Chevy Corvette.

+1, The 1000 has a touring crowd cult following.

from experience, I personally don't think the 1000 or their other touring bikes are all they're cracked up to be and certainly not worth the money when compared to modern touring bikes. i'm fully prepared to be flamed.

I sold a 1000 a while ago for 700+ and had plenty of competitors for it. But I believe 380 can. is much more than a 310 in good condition should go for. Miyata's are damn fine bikes but there is no comparison between a 310 and a 1000
