Can anyone identify this Schwinn?

Sorry, this is the only picture I have. She wants to sell it, so I'm trying to figure out what it is, and how best to sell it in her local area (Asheville, NC).

Any thoughts, Schwinnmongers? (and by the way HELLO! Long time no see!)

For crying out loud its a Varsity...Everybody had one in life. They ain't worth a yankee continental!

Try to get 50$ or less. Its highway robbery to sell a varsity for over 50$

I'm English - I don't know nothing from Schwinns, and she doesn't know any vintage bike fans over there. $50 was about what I thought it was worth though.

Maybe a few years ago. The prices have crept up. I just sold one for $75.

What is going on with that chain? How is she pedaling that? In my neck o the woods, a varsity in excellent condition can fetch $100 - $150.

Perhaps she could read the name on it, the decal is on the downtube.

I think the problem is that she is currently located in Colorado, whereas the bike is in Asheville. If being asked what this bike is really bothers you, you can just skim over, but I've done my share of helping people with things on this forum over the years, and I really do feel like I ought to be able to ask people to identify something I know nothing about.

In other news, I'm fairly sure that she's trackstanding, rather than pedalling.

Varsities had side-pull brakes. With the long-cage Huret, I'd say Super Sport.

well, $50 may be right...cool bike even if just to hang on the wall. Interestingly, there is a $325 early '70s Schwinn Continental on the Asheville CL right now.

Tubular fork and centerpull brakes means at least a continental (not that they are that much more desirable than a varsity). But I think Noah is correct -- probably a super sport, which means cro-mo frame and a significant step up. I think I can see three words in the decals, and it looks like it might be 1 1/8" tubing rather than the 1" for the lower models.

Edit: It looks like it might be a forged rear dropout, which means pre-1971 -- https://www.sheldonbrown.com/schwinn-braze.html

I think Super Sport, because it looks like it has the larger seatpost. I cant tell because I am unable to inlarge the photo. Sammyboy, if you have the original photo see if you can blow it up to see :1 if it is 3 word on the down tube (Schwinn Super Sport vs Schwinn Continental) 2 see if the seat post is really small or the larger one for the Super Sports.
I know you are very familure with vintage light wieghts and skilled in research on the internet, but here is where I go for Schwinn information: Bob Huffords - Schwinn Light Wieght Data Book, & TR Findleys catalog scans.
A report/artical on Shelodon's sight goes over the differance between the electro forged vs the fillet brazed.
My personal experance with the Super Sport was good. It was a nice ride and was set up that anyone could service it with normal house hold tools. In some ways it was an unoticed stroke of brillance. Do not think that it will feel as live as a high end bike, but it is a big step up from the varsity. They are overbuilt and will last lifetimes.+

I thought Varsity at first like others did, but upon closer inspection it does look like a Super Sport, making it worth more than a mere Varsity.

It's a Super Sport. Check the serial number to verify the year.

https://www.geocities.com/sldatabook/serial.html

I'd take nice photos and list it on eBay. Be sure to reference the article on Sheldon's site pointing out what makes these fillet-brazed Schwinns special. Make arrangements to have it packed and shipped (insured) through a local bike shop. Not much of a hassle ... and should bring the best price.

Cute girl -- reminds me of my high-school girlfriend. The bike reminds me of my junior-high bike ...

It has my vote for a Super Sport as well. Along with the tubular fork, center pull brakes and thicker seat post, notice the long cage RD. Not a Varsity nor a Continental feature. Could this become the next "Sporty?"

+1 Super Sport: decal on side of downtube appears to be two words. Thats why I mentioned to read it.

In the Asheville market, assuming it is ready to ride (and with the chain hanging loose, that could be a poor assumption), $150. Could do better on ebay, but you have the shipping issue.

I thought that was just really fast shutter speed while she was back-pedaling!

btw, wrk101, you know anything about that Continental I mentioned on the Asheville CL? it's x-posted here in Knoxville too

Says Super Sport on the downtube. Fits too - tubular fork, one-piece crankset.

That guy with the Continental has been posting it on both Greenville and Asheville C/L for the last six months at least. I guess he is looking for that one elusive/dimwitted buyer.

My price estimate was based on someone actually selling the bike :^))))

The bikes that sell around here are on the cheap end of the scale: $75 to $150. But properly presented, and in top condition, that bike is worth at least $150.

I shall suggest she polishes it up! Her brother in law is mechanic enough to have restored 50's pickup, so he can probably wrench on a Schwinn if it needs it. I certainly can't fly transatlantic to do it!

Super Sport. Look closely at the down tube decal. Not many Schwinns had a two word name. There's a noticable break in the decal. I'd give $50 for the saddle if it's the B.15.,,,,BD

Use a general automobile "scratch remover" product (I don't know if KIT Scratch Out or Meguiars Scratch X are sold in England) to shine up the frame. Avoid the decals.

At first I thought it was an old Schwinn in the UK.

I'm with the Pastor on ebay bringing the best price, or you could list it on C/L for 150 and just be done with it.

Kurt, I've been polishing decals, albeit carefully. It removes that old yellowed look that schwinn decals acquire from 35 years of garage living.

A little penetrating lube on the freewheel "should" get it spinning again. I wouldn't use that pic to advertise it though with the chain slack on top. It would be a good pic otherwise though if she can arrange to do another trackstand for the photographer. Nice smiles do help to sell bikes.

If you do go with ebay then set a reserve price. Also contact the various LBS's in the region where the bike is and have their contact info handy if someone wants to call them to inquire on their own about having a shop box it up for shipment.

Are you certain she wants to sell it? She might change her mind if you could find a way to get it tuned up with fresh tires and back to where she is now so she could get some miles on it. Might even make for a nice Valentine's Day present for her. Just a thought.
