    HELP!!!!! Frame and fork ID

    A friend of mine told me to post. I got another mystery frame.Can someone please tell me what this frame and fork is.All that is mentioned on the frame is the sticker SPECIAL DOUBLE BUTTED then at the bottom of the decal it reads SERIE EXTRA LEGERE, in the middle of the decal SUPER VITUS 980.It is stamped RGF on the top of the bottom bracket housing tube with one single hole at the bottom of the tube.At the rear dropouts and fork dropouts it is stamped SUPER VITUS.It is extremely!!!!! light weight and built with thin tubing.I have looked up Vitus info and there's not a whole lot out there.....any help would greatly be appreciated.Here are some pictures.Thank you

    I can't tell you the maker, but it looks nice: that's a Gargette Bros BB shell (used by many builders in many countries) and what seem to be Prugnat lugs, but may be a similar pattern from another lug shop. BB threading and seatpost size will help determine if it's French or not, the tubing decal may be true or just put on cause it looked good.
    Edit: upon re-reading, the fact it has Vitus dropouts and forkends really makes the case for it being Vitus tubing, and with the BB shell it is a strong argument for it being French...but threading and seatpost size will tell more. I still don't recognize the make based on other details.

    unworthy1 thank you for helping.I checked the seatmast diameter it's 27.2 and the bottom bracket is English at 68 cm's across.

    hmmm...not conclusive: you say the shell's 68mm but is the *threading* metric (35mm x 1mm, both sides RH threading) or British (1.37" x 24tpi and with LH threads on the drive-side)?
    27.2 seems to indicate it's not "metric" dimensioned tubing, but then I'm not familiar enough with Vitus 980 to know their practices...somebody here will know.

    FWIW: The seat post on my Colnago is 27.2. It has Columbus tubing.

    Unworthy1 I have installed a sugino bottom bracket to the shell.The cups are of the british measurement of 1.37" X24tpi While the Non drive side flushes into the shell with ease the drive side cup doesn't quite flush leaving about 3 mm gap.I suppose I could torque on it to flush but I'd have to torque on it pretty tightly to get it flushed so I'm thinking either the drive side cup is too long or the threading is to short, please forgive my novice expierence here.Hope this helps a bit more.wrk101, Colnago cool beans.Miguela I got some thick "A _ _" socks I gotta pull out of tha draw. Yea it's a sweet little scoot.You can't buy everything....LOL!!!!!!

    I like the mixed headset--Campagnolo on the bottom, whatever on top.

    And Vitus made some nice tubes back in the day. I'd heard that it required less "cleaning up" than Columbus, SP or SL, or Reynolds 531.

    oldbobcat the mixed headset was kinda thrown on there from the gentleman I got it off of.I may sell it but then maybe not. I am most likely gonna disassemble all that and throw on a Campy Groupo.Don't know as of yet what I will do.T-Mar are you around, your input on that black frame was fantastic.Can you help out here.

    so it's a BSC threaded Gargette shell and 27.2 seatpost, I'm inclined to say "Not French". It might be British, could be something more exotic (Spanish, Belgian) but I get more of a "Brit" feel from the seat stay caps (any serial number anywhere??). The problem you may be having with the BB, assuming it's a standard non-sealed unit: install the driveside first and screw it in flush and tight. The non-driveside should stick out "proud" of the shell a bit so you can thread on the lockring. Or you may have an axle (spindle) with too wide a center dimension for the cups.

    unworthy1 I combed the bike over looking for a serial # but nothing, there's no serial # anywhere.As far as the bottom bracket situation, it's the drive side cup that I am having a difficult time getting the cup flushed to the frame.The non drive side with the lock ring fits fine.I did this without installing the spindle. I did a double take just to make sure I was installing the cups on the right side.I'll have to play with it somemore. Hey 23skidoo stop raggin on my beautiful tile.lol!!!!!!

    Weird, my SR has the same general style of seat stay caps, yet more oval shaped on the lower end. These have more of a point on the dropout side of the cap.,,,,BD

    many of the older open BB units had pretty short cups and so the BB shells didn't need threads cut very deep...you may have just run out of threads, but be sure to check the condition (any cross-threading or bunged threads?) and cleanliness (rust, gunk). I love to take a circular wire brush on an electric drill to all my BBs, the brush is a perfect snug fit: I use Fwd & Rev functions on the drill to go with the thread direction...those threads sparkle in just a few minutes, and much cheaper than a set of BB taps!

    unworthy1 the shell was cleaned up pretty good , I'm sure I'll find myself in this situation again.Think I'll look for a shallower cup for the drive side.I am wondering if this Campy Crankset bottom bracket that I have will slide in without any problems.If not, I'd be bummed. I am still looking for info on Vitus, if that's what it is. Anybody know of any good links........
