Weight of a Raleigh Comp GS: Heavy or normal?

I finally finished one of my many winter projects. This is a black and chrome Comp GS, 531 db and etc. Wow, I am a sucker for shiny black paint and shiny chrome. Nothing like it on two or four wheels.

It is a '78 model, 59cm 23 1/4 inch frame (ctt). It weighs about 25 pounds.

Is this normal? Granted, it is a larger frame, but I was hoping it'd be lighter. I'm 6'2' and I used to weigh a lot less when younger! Nevertheless, it is what it is. I obtained the weight by a digital bathroom scale w/me on it holding it and w/o out it. Sorry, but I don't have a digital hanging scale to obtain the 'last ounce' measurement.

I can't think of any special components that'd have any impact on the bottom line.

BTW, just so you don't get the wrong idea, I had it out this last weekend in 30* weather and I absolutely LOVE this bike. It fits just great and really moves! Totaly lively and had a 10 speed guy shaking his head every time he looked at the toe clips, slotted cleats and straps. It was obvious he'd never been exposed to such perfection before!

Anyway, I weigh abouit 225 so a few extra 'grams' on a frame probably won't matter!

Any comments?

What wheels and crankset are you running? You're actually quite close to the catalog spec of 24 pounds for the 23.5" bike.

Hi Zorro,

**Crankset: Athena 53/42 using a Campy cartridge BB. Seven speed Sachs 12-26.
**Wheels: Record lo flange hubs, Mavic Open 4CD 36 spoke rims. Continental Supersonic GranPrix clinchers (700x20c).

I don't know if that gives any insight into the bike. It is kinda 'updated' but it is really great. I'm sure the bike would give any 10 speed a run for the money, even w/the down tube shifters. The driver is the weak link!!

Interesting ensemble. Perhaps I'll see it some day. You're not that far. We can share stories of engine demise.

25lbs sounds normal for large 531db frame.

Apparently the bike did, too :

But seriously, does it matter?:

I think it would take some carbon fiber components to really shave some weight.

If you are running the original Weinmann concave rims, they are very heavy. They don't have a hook in them to hold the tire either, so that is an area where you might shave some weight.

I have a 62 c-t (about 60 c-c) Gazelle champion Mondial AA frame, full 531 DB, full super record (nuovo record BB) record SL pedals etc. low flange 32 hole record hubs with Campagnolo Omega tubulars, I have used a cinelli 1R stem (with the alloy bolts and all to save weight)... concor max saddle... and yeah it's 24.5 lbs. It seems to me that these big frame pack some extra weight. I am also adding weight with the wider bars, longer stem and longer cranks... somehow it adds up to 2-3 pounds over the smaller builds.

The Reynolds sticker reflects it being a db frame w/fork and stays.

You can shave some weight off if you go with tubes. My bike came with them and side-by-side with some clinchers of the same vintage, it was a very noticeable difference in weight. One reason why I went with the tubulars.

I'd weight my bike for you, but it's winterized with lights and fenders right now.

I just found a 1973 Raleigh catalogue on line;the bike had 531 DB main tubes, which is what I remember. The stays were apparently made out of an unspecified, but heavier material...

The later ones were full 531. My '78 was a full campy (GS) with a full 531 frame. it is still full campy, but fixed.

Sounds like a great bike Steve...but where, oh where are the pics? Here's the '79 GS I rebuilt last year:

She's a 60 cm and tips the scales at 24.8 or so. Probably the Brooks saddle adds some gramage. The Reynolds stickers list all tubes as 531.

I understand!!

I've been trying to figger it out!

First I have to get a flicker acct.

Then upload it.

Sorry, it is very daunting!!

I'd really like to do it right now, but that's not posible. I'll let you know when it is presentable!!

Ok, here's my excuse: I don't have a flicker acct!!!

It is another softwear program to Eff--up my computer.

If necessary, i'll take steps to get the pics to you, but not at the moment.
