Did CL change overnight?

The format for selling and several other features on our local CL is completely different now...You need to sign up/register... Did anybody else get a surprise today??

The confirmation email is completely different and editing is now kind of a PITA....

Wondering what's going on here....?

Anti-spam measures is my guess. I think the spammers have figured out a way to harvest e-mails using CL.

There have been some threads here during the last six months about changes coming to CL, I wonder if what you are seeing is the first wave of those changes. From the viewer/shopper side my local site still looks the same, but I might be putting something up there in the next week or so so I guess I'll find out how different it is.

Thanks Sirrus Rider and Treebound,

I guess it's not THAT bad; I just don't like abrupt change as much as I used to..... I backed off my security settings and editing is now easier for me on my machine, but still different...

The Seattle CL required me to register to list a bike but the one across the state for Spokane did not. It may be dependent on the market and specific category.

CL has always charged for a few categories of listings in a few of the biggest cities - like NYC, LA etc. That is how they pay for everything and make their money. From every interview I have ever seen with Craig Newmark I would be surprised if they started charging for all categories in all markets.

Now ebay, who owns a minority stack in the company, certainly would have a totally different idea I am sure.

There goes the neighborhood. I'll have to ask my elected representatives to make sure they never become the majority owner.

It is funny the way eBay got the chunk of stock. The way CL did the stock options to employees, the company did not have right of first refusal in purchasing them, should the employee want to sell them. Someone who left the company wanted to sell and eBay was very happy to oblige. Company did not know about it until it was already done.

if CL starts charging for ads people will just quit using it, the same way people are starting to quit using ebay. and really, how hard would it be for someone else to step in and take the place of craigslist if they so desired?
