Bottechia: Any good?
Came across a real old looking road bike at a yard sale - label said "Bottechia"? Is that Italian? Had OLD Campy deraillers on it - rear was made of stamped steel and said "EXTRA" on it. 27 inch wheels. Lugged steel frame, and the lugs were chromed. The paint was grey, but under one of the worse scratches it looked like chrome. Is this a chromed frame? How vintage is it? Is this thing worth anything? She wasn't asking much, but money is tight, and didn't want to make an impulse buy.

That's a Bottecchia Special. It's one up from the entry level road bike in Bottecchia's line up. Frame is plain hi-tensile steel, fully chrome plated under the paint. Derailleurs are Campagnolo Valentino Extra. It's probably a basic boom period early 70's bike. It should ride nice but might be a bit flexy if you are heavy or a strong rider. Probably weighs about 27-lbs give or take. Prices vary considerably based on condition and a variety of other factors. Could range anywhere from $50 for one that is functional but needs some work and lots of TLC to $300+ for one in near mint condition in a popular size. It would be a nice bar hooper/grocery getter/ride around campus bike. What size is it? I've been looking for a 23" for a while now but haven't found one. Maybe we could work something out if you don't want it.

S/N 097732
Owner said that he bought it used in 1964.
Any info on this bike?

Not enough info to go on there. I don't think Bottecchia serial numbers indicate anything. A few pictures of the bike would be really helpful. If it's an all chrome frame with Campagnolo dropouts and Campagnolo Record components it's probably a Bottecchia Professional from the period which would be a pretty decent bike but Bottecchia made everything from kids' bikes and city bikes to top of the line stuff so I would really need to see the pictures. It would help me fill in some gaps in my knowledge too as good pictures of bikes from that period are hard to come by.

Bottechia made a full line of bikes, from entry level (which yours appears to be) to world class professional racing machines.
