Black 1" threaded headset?

Anyone aware of any black threaded headsets I can keep an eye out for? All I see is currently produced pieces that are eithe $15 Nashbar (which might be OK) or $100+.

Thanks,

Joe

Try ebay, I've seen tange, dura-ace, and hattas. Some black, some not. I've been looking at black stuff as well. I've also seen the ritchey logic for good prices too, picking one up for my brother's miyata project.

Stronglight A-9's too. But be careful there. The steel ones aren't as good as the needle bearing ones.

Like the kind I pulled out of a Pacific mountain bike the other day?
Maybe the headtube is to big.

I wonder about these.

https://www.xxcycle.com/a9-st,,en.php

It says needle bearings in one place and "ballsbearings" in another. I've seen a cutaway diagram and they're definitely balls. Has Stronglight ever made a bad part? Somebody try one and give us a report.

AFAIK, all the A9 headsets use needle bearings. I've never seen one with balls.

That's a hell of a price for an A9 headset! Usually I see them in the $25-$40 range.

Great replies and ideas everyone. I appreciate the responses. The Ritchey looks nice and the right price too!

I haven't seen too many on eBay in black, but I suppose it is hit or miss.

Calm down. It's not an A9, it's an A9 ST and it has ball bearings. I used to get A9's from that site for $26. That's why most of my bikes have them. Stronglight stopped making them and they ran out soon afterward. I don't know anything about the A9ST, but it's a Stronglight, so how bad can it be? It's heavy, though.

I said I've seen a diagram. Do you doubt my word?

Steel with ball bearings.

How expensive are you seeking to go? You could go for the Ritchie one, a Stronglight A9-St ball bearing or the high price spread of an Edco Competition.

a company called starf*ckers, a Japanese track bike botique makes a black alloy needle bearing threaded in black for about $70 shipped, or a chris king or hope, but then your over the $100 mark.

Shimano 105 is good quality and almost all black.

Cartridge bearing mean you only will ever have to replace the cartridges and not the cups.

Here's a link to a real needle-bearing A9 in black - $60. I live in Mpls and I've seen these live and in person at the store, so I know they're the classic A9 rather than the new product.

I mentioned earlier about the origin8. I found this after I broke the lock ring on my stronglight competition head set. Not a real close up, but you get a pretty good idea what it looks like. It is a sealed bearing head set and it came with 2 different fork races. I found it at my LBS.

Be aware that there were some A-9's made with black plastic cups.

Yes - it really is black. I visited in person looking for a silver one, and all they had was the black.

Primax made a nice black one that looks very ninety-ish. Well made, exchangeable parts throughout, and Stronglight parts (races and needles) will fit.

The Bike Stand has some A-9's on their Vintage Parts page: https://thebikestand.com/vint.html

Caveat -- I've never gotten anything from them, but I get good vibes from their website.
