Relatively Inexpensive Bar-End Shifters?

Does anyone know of a website that sells barcons for under 40 dollars? New, Used, NOS, whatever.

+ 1. There were some on my local CL but that won't help you.
I just ordered bar end shifter pods from Rivendell for $25 plus shipping. I will put my DT shifters on them and have bar cons. If everything works as planned.

I bought a pair of brand new DuraAce 9 speed bar end shifters and really didn't like them. The right shifter doesn't click through all of the gears and I almost hit a tree when I tried them out. I went ahead and bought regular 10 speed Ultegra shifters for the bike I was re-building so you're welcome to the bar cons if you like.

How much are you looking for for the duraace barcons? I'm pretty broke right now as I'm nursing a broken arm and out of work, but if you're still looking to get rid of them in a couple months I might be interested.

Those Rivendell mounts are interesting, I've wondered if such a thing existed.

They're yours for the asking. I'll even pay for shipping.

I will report back on Monday after they arrive. I am going to attach Suntour Sprint shifters. The rear is indexed so I am hoping it will work in indexed mode. It should.

Regarding not clicking through the 9 gears....I discovered on another SIS downtube shifter that if the casted splines in the mating cap have cracked, the shifter doesn't index.

Got the Riv pods. They work great. Really easy to hook up. $34 w/ shipping
Unhook cables
Attach pods to bar ends
Remove DT shifters
Cable stops on shifter bosses
Shifters on pods
Run new cables and housing
Attach
Test ride and tweak a little
The indexing still works fine.

I am still reaching down for the DT shifters out of habit but it's really nice to have the bar ends

Pics after bar tape goes on

The Rivendale pods are the same as Shimano pods, but they don't say Shimano on them. They copied the design with permission from Shimano. You can try different shifters if you have an old, broken set of Shimanos like I did.

It required some modification, but they work.

How do they work with genuine Shimano down tube shifters? I'm doing a 9 sp set of thumbies with Paul thumbies. I've going to have left over ends so a new project is in order.

you just need to get a flat version of the notched silver plastic washer that goes between the tube and the shifter. riv sells them for a few bucks on the same page as the pods

I heard it requires something extra to get the retrofriction levers to work with the pods? Is this true? what exactly did you do and now that its setup how well does it work?

I started with banded Retrofriction shifters. The chrome backing plate from the Simplex shifters fits over the square cast into the pod after a bit of work with a burr on the pod. This provides a stop for the shifter The pivot from the Simplex band is tapped for the 5mm screw that normally holds the Shimano shifters onto the pivot. The cable coming off of the shifter just happens to line up perfectly with the hole in the pod.

I had left over pods because I did this with the shifters:

Neat idea Dirtdrop.

Those would look stunning with polished generic Riv pods.

One thing Rivindale fails to mention and you'll see if you study the pictures of mine, is that the shifters end up oriented backwards because they're upside down and there's no way around it.
