Brake pad source
I've been hunting around the Internet for a deal on brake pads for my two old Fujis and found this for $16

Would these pads work?
The only other option might be a bunch of Koolstops from Harris Cyclery which would cost me over $40.

Usually Niagara has great stuff cheap - but not in this case. Those are not great. Here are some other generic-type brake-pads that would fit:

+1 on the Kool Stops.
Put those in old Weinmann center pulls and you can lock up the rear wheel.

No kidding. In v-brakes you can sail clear over the handlebars. People will think it's trick-riding. Until the ambulance comes.

But maybe I'll just get 4 pairs from biketoolsetc. I'd hate to have 42 brake pads left over after I discover I don't like them

Yes - I'm afraid that would be the outcome. I remember those pads pictured - the cheapies - They were everywhere in the 1970's and 1980's. Squealing, howling, out-of-alignment, and generally no fun. Those in the know bought Mathauser brake-pads made by Scott Mathauser. These later became the Kool Stop pads we know today. The component that gives them their legendary stopping-power, and their 'salmon' color, is finely powdered ferric oxide - rust. Actual rust you'd find on old iron pipes. They work very well at stopping you. Over the handlebars if not careful.

Niagara does have the Dia Compe pads, but you need to buy a box of 50. ($59)

Am running Scott Mathausers on both my vintage bikes. Excellent stopping power, very noticeably improved over stock Campy pads.
