Thought I found something...Moto Gran Record

Yeah, I stopped by a yard sale and found a silver Motobecane Gran Record. I've wanted a Moto for a while, so I brought it home, I sort of like this old champ, with it's Bernard Hinault saddle Sun Tour friction shifters on the down tube, Weinmann brakes, Vitus double butted frame, Phillipe stem and bar, Tange hs, and the 27x1 inch Rigida rims tied to Maillard 700 36 hole hubs and five speed cassette.
Spent the rest of the day at work day dreaming about this bike, got home, and did a search on Moto GRs in this forum. Not a lot said about them, oh well... Still wonder if I want to go fixie with it, or keep it vintage. I'd like a little more info though, it is a wonderfully light bike, next to my Schwinn World Sport, as a fixed gear I figure I'd be flying. I'll fire up the digital this afternoon and do some shots to post.

sounds like a very nice bike. i would make a nice ride whether you leave it stock, or fixify it. The suntour components shift like a charm too. i pretty sure that the gran record is one of the higher end rides, certainly higher end than my super mirage. how much did you pay for it?

A whopping 10.00 usd.
In trying to adjust the stem height, ran into an odd size allen head, one I don't have in my car tools or on the bike tools, any ideas what size that might be?
the SunTour components are Cyclone. the shift levers have power shifter written on the washers.
There are 1/2" holes in the bars where the hoods are suppose to go, but nothing goes in them.

That head badge is the later type, 80s, just like the one on my Grand Touring. The earlier models had a round, painted, brass badge. There was a Grand Record for sale at the Seattle Swap meet but it was an older model with sewups, Campagnolo shifters & Record Derailleurs. Not sure if I remember the price correctly but I believe they were asking $400 US. Great find.

I'd make a bet it's a 7mm. Some French stems, particularly atax, irritatingly used this size. I keep a couple floating aroung the tool box, as I have a couple of these stems. They're not easy to find-- call around to auto parts stores and hardware stores, but if they don't have them, try biketoolsetc. I've gotten them there before.

Today's project is getting it on the road. So I'm off to the LBS to see if I can't find one, there are a couple auto part stores, and a couple hardware stores to see if they have something that size. I've been trying to make a five do the trick and it won't go, so before I strip the sucker out I'm off to find a 7mm. This ought to be a fun bike.

Try a 6mm first; they're easier to find and some French stems used this size as well (including Atax, confusingly. Some are 6mm, some 7mm). But the 7mm is not uncommon.

It is definately a 7. Found a shop with one that raised the stem for me, but didn't have one to sell, so I'm still hunting that down. It's a fun ride at the moment. Fixed it, a 40x15. I think I may take the ring up to a 46 or a 48, but right now it's a fun little ride.
