Mysterious Peugeot

Hi guys!

I found this bike on sale in a brazilian website like Ebay, very interesting frame but the seller don't know anything about the bike, just said "It's a old german racing bike..."

I purchase the "german bike" for a good price and bring it home. Analizing the frame and the lugs, i realized that bike is a Peugeot, but i've been trying to pin down what model and year it is! Can anyone help me with this?

Some information:

Serial number is 9033730, so I assume by the dating convention that this bike was made in '79. I think some components, like the rear derailleur, shifters and rims are replacements.

Crank - SR (manuf. date 85H - 1985?)
Rear derailleur: Shimano 105 (manuf. date MK - 1988?)
Shifters: Shimano 105 (manuf. date NA - 1989?)
Seat post: Campagnolo
Sadlle: Concor Supercorsa
Rims: Araya RED tubulars
Hubs Sansin (manuf. date OC - 1986?)
Handlebar: Shimano
Brakes: Shimano 600

The original paint is silver, and the previous owner re-painted it over with a red metallic, but keep 2 stripes of the original paint in the seat post.

Above the rear dropout are a engraving "Simplex".

Thanks in advance for some help!

Lets assume its Peugeot for a moment.....

Braze on cable guides, Simplex dropouts and down tube shifters eliminate the low end. The small square stick-on head badge puts in the '79-very eary 80's time frame. Other frame detials are the tight scroll work on the fork crown and Bocama lugs.

Those feature point to one of 2 models, the PFN10 which is a Vitus 181 tubed bike produced from 1979-1983 or a PF60 which was produced from '82-'83. The only problem with it being a PFN10 is the color, U.S. market PFN's were not available in silver but the PF60 was. Because this a foreign market bike it could have been available in Silver. In the U.S. market PFN's had half chrome forks and the PF60's had fully chrome forks.

All of the components have been replaced so they wouldnt help out as far as model ID.

What is the serial number format? Ant letters or spaces?

Perhaps its Y903 3730?

Hi Jim!

In the frame, the serial number engraved is just "9033730", no letters or spaces.

I made a contact with the son of the previous owner and he only know he bought and used the bike in Germany for a few years, and bring it to Brazil as personal item and placed into a garage. No more information...

Maybe that's the reason why the bicycle is painted silver?

Thats probably the reason. For obvious reasons each markets bike were designed with colors and specification for the their respective market.

European markets often used different nomenclature than the U.S. so it could have been sold under a model name.

Peugeot did manufacturer some Columbus frames, though not in the timeframe Jim suspects. The decal was obviously added after the repaint and may not be indicative of the original tubing. Regardless, a Columbus frame can be verified by the presence of the helical ridges on the inside bottom of the fork's steerer tube.
