Fausto Coppi w/ Columbus Genius Tubing - too light for me?

Hi All,

Need some advice -

I've come across a nice NOS 1991 Fausto Coppi lugged Columbus Genius steel frame w/ fork (chrome) in my size, 56cm.

I'm 175lbs - is this tube set too light/fragile for me? It would be used on the street a bit and on longer fast rides on paved bike trails, etc.

I'd eventually like to race it.

I have heard, however, that this tubing is not for the even slightly heavy rider - i think the frame weighs in at a meager 2.3 pounds or thereabouts.

Waytoomanybikes has a Coppi in Genius, and he weighs more than you. No problems other than the ride is unbelievably smooth.

If it's a fair price, buy it, ride it, and love it. This is from someone waaaaaay heavier than you are.

You buying from the guy in Hungary? I was sorely tempted, then found my De Rosa.

A little frame flex makes for a more comfy ride. Enjoy it...You are lucky to have the chance for such a nice frame. I suspect the steel market will increase in value as stupid consumers find faults in carbon fiber products. Be sure to frame saver the tubes as best you can.

Thinner steel will be less forgiving than the thicker tubing. I wouldn't worry to much. It might not be fashionable but I suggest a top tube protector...A modestly light fall could dent the tubing. Good luck.

I'm actually buying it locally from a guy here -

As it turns out, it may not be Genius - something called Columbus Allez? Not Alle, but Allez...

Any ideas?

Pretty sure that would be Aelle. Before you buy you should contact this guy:
https://www.matuzmaster.hu/en/modern-frames/

If I remember correctly, I was quoted under $600 for f/f delivered, NOS.

Yes, thank you - it looks just like the second Aelle frameset pictured, the blue one with the dramatic-looking fork.

The local guy is asking $400 for the frame and fork and it's near mint - never been built up.

$600 was for Genius, I'm guessing Aelle would be considerably less. E Mail the guy, he's prompt, just remember the time difference, you won't hear back tonight.

Nice frames. Great value for the price (Genius).

If you have a choice between two bikes from the same builder, one on Genius for $600 and the other in Aelle for $400, I'd say go for the Genius. It's well worth the extra $200, IMHO.
