1983 Trek 600 painted and ready for build

Painted in the "alternate" color scheme listed in the brochure.
Decals by jrrestore

I still need a few things to build it up, but it's not going to be a factory issue.

Amazing! If you don't mind me asking, who did the paint? I have a similar bike in need of a repaint/powdercoat.

Painted it myself. Sherwin-Williams Dimension basecoat/clearcoat system. This makes the 6th bike I've sprayed. Just wish I had somewhere better than a tent to do it.

Looks amazing!
The seatpost is only painted the taupe color and has a color wrapped decal right?
I was going to do the same thing with my 520, but I was just going to have it powdercoated the with the single color and hope to find the color wrap decal.

Absolutely stunning. What I particularly like about it is that it doesn't have the slightest appearance of being a repaint - it has a wonderful new-out-of-the-box "factory original finish" look about it.

Parts I have for the build so far:
Stronglight 104 crankset w/drillium big ring
Campy NR derailleurs w/GS DT shifters
Suntour Superbe brake calipers
Campy SR non-aero brake levers w/some of those EA aftermarket hoods
Cinelli bars and stem
OMAS/Wolber tubular wheels w/ aero spokes I found in the trash and cleaned up.
A choice of used tubulars I have to pick from.

Still need a few things - BB, headset, and I have a LaPrade seatpost I may change out

Oh, and I have an OE Trek headbadge coming thanks to banjo mole

Although not factory, I've been thinking about outlining only the headlug/headtube joint with gold, and fill in the TREK panto at the top of the seatstays with the same? Any comments?

that could look pretty sweet if you could match the lug outline with the badge.

Awesome DIY paint job! As Kurt mentioned, it looks factory fresh. Your results are inspiring.
You got to do a write up on your home paint booth setup and painting process. I may just try it myself in my garage. Although I don't think my compressor has enough volume.

My setup? Pretty basic

150 pi max, 6.2cfm@90psi compressor. This guy is a workhorse for ~$270, but I don't think HD carries it anymore.

An old Sharpe air filter/dryer from about 1981

$50 Craftsman detail gun. My '81 Devilbiss was just too big for this work.

$22 tent on sale at Walmart + $1 sheets of plastic around 2 sides to block wind

organic cartridge respirator + overalls, hat, and clear glasses

Plus bent coathangers and real paint hooks, sliced toilet tissue rolls in the BB and headtube, green painter's tape

Ohh... Now that I've seen the bike I don't think the headbadge is pretty enough for it!
That bike is gorgeous, utterly stunning, Kurt nailed it when he described it as looking "factory original."

That is an awesome paint job. What did you use to strip the paint?

"Aircraft stripper" in a spray can, IIRC bought at AutoZone or the like. Plus some steel wool, sandpaper , and elbow grease. A little bondo in a small top tube dent, and prepped with phosphoric acid before painting. I did use a high build primer because of little rust pits around the lugs, sanded down and reprimed prior to painting the base coat.

And I left this out of my setup post, but this is very important to spray all over the tent prior to painting.
