What model Schwinn do I have?
So I recently bought an old Schwinn off of Craigslist. So the guy said it was an "old Schwinn triathlon bike" I've been trying to find out exactly what kind of model it is. So the SN is A873996 and according to a lot of sites this is a Japan Schwinn built in 1978 but I haven't been able to find any site that can help me find out about the actual model. Can someone help me out with this?

The serial number is a January of 1978 or 1988 build. Check the catalogs ...

there are subtle differences amongst the Panasonic/Japan built Schwinns. You'll need to post pictures of the seat lug cluster and the inside of the fork near the crown. Considering there was only 2 or 3 Panny built Schwinns in '88 it shouldnt be to hard to figure out.

It looks to have an integrated RD hanger and thus forged dropouts. If this is a 1978, this would limit it to a Super Le Tour 12.2 or a Volare (and let's just pray a Volare was not rattle canned)!
In 1988, there were more Japan and Taiwan Schwinns which had the integrated hanger.

Well, seeing as how that's no way a 21" frame, I doubt it's a Volare.

If it helps it seems that the bike was originally blue and the fork say TANGE Japan so I hope that helps to narrow it down. Welcome all guesses.

I think he means a combination of "Drew" and "FUBAR". On this board, "Drew" is pejorative word used to describe the ruining of a C&V bike by attempts to customize or modernize it (such as by fixed-gear conversion), usually by an irreversible means, whether intentionally or not, such that the C&V value has been diminished or lost entirely. The origin is the name of such a person who was known to have done this.

Oh, thanks and well it's really not my fault all I had to work with was a frameset. I mean I just wanted to make it ride-able again and it's kind of hard to keep it original when you don't know what exactly it is. If it's any consolation I'm planning on powder coating it back to its original blue.

It doesn't look like a triathlon bike from 1988 or it would have a top tube that sloped forward.
Better pics of the rest of the frame would help.
lol@ drubar but honestly this bike could be rehabbed if the frame turned out to be worth the work

I should have been more clear.
pastorbob narrowed it down to being either a Volare, or a Super Le Tour 12.2.
Seeing as how it's a 19" frame, it couldn't be a Volare - which means, it must be a Super Le Tour 12.2.

Oh, ok well thanks for all the help and trust me I feel pretty bad about the state of it, but I will do my best to bring her back to her former glory (as much as my $$ allows).

Is it your size? If not, don't worry about glory.

They didn't really have a perfect emoticon. Just trying to say that if the frame doesn't fit you, there's little point in trying to make it back to "good as new". Even if it does, don't feel any shame if you make a compromise or two along the way. Having a bicycle that you really like at the end of the project is what matters.
