Watanabe Japanese track - $1650 (Somerville, MA)

Quote:
The frame has been crashed, it has a bit of a kink on the top tube, but it's so minor I couldn't really get a picture of it with my cell phone. I won't guarantee it won't fall in two on you when you're riding, but that's the story with most Japanese frames out there! Please do inquire about coming to take a look at the bike.

$1650. I will consider serious offers, but price all the parts of the bike yourself before you make a stupid offer (hint: it will come to more no matter how you try to work it out).

Need I say more?

It still has the original Helicomatic hub! Those are priceless! (as in: " I wouldn't pay anything for a Helicomatic hub")

I posted this EXACT same bike in the "looking for" thread TWO days ago. It was listed for $25, and today what do I see ?

"1970's Peugeot, great condition, new tune up with new tires, brakes, and chain.
size is 60cm, which is perfect for someone 5'9-6'3."
...
$225

I dunno. That Peugeot looks nice. Lovely decals, nice patina. Not sure I'd pay $225 for it unless the parts were all original, but she's definitely a looker (at least to my eye).

Here's a very reasonable CL offer. A lot of 9 bikes for $40. I'll bet they are worth at least that much as scrap metal.

Late 1970s Raleigh Grand Prix - the guy won't accept anything less than $340 for the bottom-of-the-line 30-pounder Raleigh road bike made at a time the Raleigh company was desperate to cut costs (and quality). AND it seems to be missing some decals or it's been partially repainted, so even for a cheap-ass bike collector like me this one's hardly worth $50 for parts. I'm guessing that one's going to be around for a while.

And he calls it a leather saddle, and it's obviously vinyl. What, he thinks that Brooks means leather?

I was thinking the same thing before I read your text. something looks odd on the TT and a chrome fork on a bike like that is usually a replacement

Yet another Raleigh Grand Prix going for at least twice what it's worth to even a dumbass like me who loves underdogs like the Grand Prix:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...919267763.html

The thing that pisses me off about such a thing is that I might be tempted if it was offered at half what the guy is asking, but at that price it's just going to expire and the guy (who, let's face it, only wants it for the money he thinks he can get for it) is either going to let it rust for another decade or throw it in the trash. Ah well, I guess if stuff like this gets trashed it will eventually make my cute little Grand Prix worth more - not that I'm going to part with it. Still, it's a pity.

That's a phenomenon that doesn't only involve vintage bicycles. A local mental case had a Plymouth Road Runner Superbird in his yard for years -- decades actually. He refused every reasonable offer for the car, usually by cursing out the potential buyer, and accusing him of trying to steal the car. Eventually, Mr. Mental dropped dead, and the car was pulled out of the backyard mud hole....pulled out in pieces, it was more rusty than the Titanic at that stage, and looked to be in worse shape.
