I'm not sure I've ever seen the words Huffy and Lightweight used together in the same sentence.

Easier to haul to the dump that way.

I suppose there were a lot of Huffy and Schwinn bikes sold, so perhaps they'll hit some of the nostalgia market.

However, those people who are interested in spending $3000 on a bicycle probably aren't the same ones that are interested in riding a Huffy.

Holy Bridgestone Tax! (or should I say Bridgstone?) $300 for a super low end model and it still needs new rubber. Have I mentioned how much I hate Minneapolis Craigslist in the winter?

bridgstone by Japan - $300 (west saint paul, MN)

Hi I have for sale a bridgstone by japan bike in very good condition. Bike is 25/30 years old a classic needs tires and tubes has rear brakes on lower part of frame asking $300.00. Thanks for looking frame is 17 in and 27 in from seat post to floor

mstateglfr 01-27-15 09:24 AM

Ha, I comb thru the MPL CL a couple times a week and am amazed at the asking price for many listings- both newer and classic.

NJgreyhead 01-27-15 11:42 AM

Here's quite the description, and not a bad bike for the price, really. Not sure that it is the babe-magnet it is portrayed to be, tho.

"I wish that one of the categories on craigslist was "lifestyle" because I'm not just selling a bike, I'm selling confidence and swagger; and it comes with green cable housings and a loud-ass brass bell. When you roll up on this Ross Eurosport remember to ring the bell twice-- there will be a Philly Special ready for you before before you even finish getting the u-lock out from your belt. Even if you just rode to church.

Up for sale is my beloved Ross Eurosport road bike. My dad rode this thing when he was a kid. He once told me that the orange reflector on the back of the seat was one of the main reasons my mom married him. When I was born he knew he wanted to pass down his legacy to me so he kept this thing in pristine shape until he felt that I was ready to start having sex. I turned it into a single speed a few years back to cut some weight and recently re-did the brakes and brake cables with the signature green Jagwire housings you see in the photos. I also re-packed the crank bearings, replaced the rear axle, and re-packed the axle bearings when I did the brakes.

This thing was built as tough as a Mack truck in Allentown, PA and is 100% ready to ride-- no grinding gears, no bald tires, no busted brakes that you see on some of the Schwinns floating around the city for sale. I've been using it as my main mode of transportation (to yoga) for a few years and have kept it in tip-top shape. It's rare that it gets ridden in the rain and it has always been stored indoors.

If I can give you one piece of advice to enhance your life it would be to buy this bike. Then go buy a breast milk pump, chocolate syrup, a super soaker, and goggles because things are about to get a little weird.

This thing is competitively priced so don't be "that guy" that tries to haggle $10 off of a $75 bike. It's not a good look.."

Cute story about the Ross...
Might have been a head-turner a few decades ago. Looks a bit worn today.

How about this one:
Two bikes, in pieces. Make them whole again.

If this isn't a metaphor, I don't know what is.

My ex decided to take up bike repair. He started on a low-end spare my dad had (Magna). Then became overly confident and tore apart my retro Raleigh beach cruiser with the intent of spiffing up the paint job. What you see in the photos is pretty much how the repairs, and the relationship, ended.

Well, in the early 1970s, Schwinns used to sell for a few hundred more than Huffys, so the relationship may still hold.

For the record, I do not trust ANY of my friends to ride that thing with me, mostly because of the amount a beer that go into getting everybody to stick their heads in this thing.

Not included, one Millennium Falcon hat and four TIE fighter hats for your five other friends to ride around you in circles

The Paramount looks like an almost decent bike... for a Schwinn.

Here is the 1970 Schwinn Catalog and the 1980 Schwinn Catalog.
If the Varsity was a couple hundred more than the Huffy.
That would put the Huffy into negative territory:(

From the 1972 Catalog, the Schwinn Paramount was a $350 bike. So if the Huffy was $50, voila, a $300 price difference in 1972

Schwinn catalogs, 1971 - 1980 (55 of 579)

Mens Cannondale "Black Lightning" road bike with Brooks saddle. About 56 frame (I'm 5'11 and this bike has been perfect). Custom paint job and upgraded RED pedals. Sturdy steel frame and comes with removable fenders.

$350 for pick up in S Minneapolis.

Matariki 01-28-15 11:51 AM

Those bobbed fenders are especially designed to dump dirt and grit onto the brakes.

I have never understood how folks can ride with the saddle pointing down like that.

do they have shill bidders maybe?

I'll see your pedals, and raise you Two Batteries for $5,001.45 of which E-Bay lists 459 out of 1,100 sold.

Yes, these were to fix my bicycle computer.

Actually, I think some sellers put a preposterous price on their items to park a web page. If you click on the "Items Sold", and it gives a list, of all the batteries sold for $1.45 (exactly $5000 less than the current list).

:P

The "new tires" are worth more than the rest of the bike.
Unless the generator is collectable.

And if someone sorts their search results by price high-to-low, guess whose listing is going to be at the top of the list?

But if the BIN price is set high (and there's no "Make an Offer"), how can a potential buyer buy it for a realistic price? Did the previous buyers buy it at $1.45, and then the seller changed the price? Maybe it's a way to indicate he only has one left?

That's what's going on - ebay doesn't like it when you frequently end auctions early because the item sold outside of ebay - and they'll ding your seller rating if you do it more than a few times. So, often, if an item is sold out at a low price, rather than ending the auction, the seller may jack up the price to a level that nobody will buy it.

Dynamic pricing on sites like Amazon tends to boost last-item-price to stratospheric levels. I'm not sure about the missing "make offer". That kind of surprised me as well. Still, there is at least a perceived benefit in showing up first in a crowded list. Witness all the "AAA" companies at the start of the phone book (presuming you still have a phone book - we don't).

Even stranger for the guy with the batteries, eBay actually lists some "sales" at those exorbitant prices:

beachs_best_batterys | eBay

They must be shill sales, but for the life of me I could find no way to report that. All the eBay pages did was lead me in circles, always coming back to the "what we will investigate" page. Oh well, eBay...
