vintage trek 1200 help...if you don't mind

I'm almost done building up my older Trek 1200 in to an 8 sp Dura Ace bike that I can use for training and Triathlons and smaller bike races. I've been contemplating finding a carbon front fork for it and right now Nashbar has theirs 50% off. Without taking the front of the bike apart is there anyway to figure steerer tube length? Or does anyone know this off hand? it's a 54cm by the way.

Should be able to measure it fairly close from the outside of the fork, if you are careful.

+1 Mechanics forum is your best bet for really good help.

It's not a fixed length for any given 54cm frame. It depends on the geometry as well as the existing headset's stack height.
If you have the fork mounted on the frame...
take a tape measure from the bottom of the fork race to the top of the locknut. This will give you a close estimate of the steerer tube length required to use the existing headset.
If you're planning on a new headset, take its stack height and add the length of the head tube to get the required length of steerer tube.
