handle bar bottle cages
i love the look of handlebar mounted water bottles, and i like the idea of having them right in front of me.
does anyone use these? what do you think of them?
i want to make a bracket myself, but i cant really find any decent pictures of this kind of mount. can anyone offer some up as some inspiration for my own?

I just got a cheapie one made by the company minoura, It's nice, works great and it's cheap, i think like $7

I bolted a cage to the reflector bracket on my '77 Le Tour. Worked so well I did it on my wife's '78 Le Tour and she thought it was great as well. Here's a pic.

I have the Minoura handlebar mount also. For $7 its hard to beat.

I did a double bottle mount with the Velo-Orange adapter, ok, but a little funky. If you can find an original TA bottle cage, those are sweet.

Funny, I'd describe the T.A. as funky compared to the Velo Orange. The only problem I have with the Velo Orange is that it's not vintage and it doesn't even look like it is. I had to machine mine to get it to fit the sleeved part of the bar.

My early 1970's Paramount is without bottle cage braze-ons, and since I didn't want to clutter up the tubes I put a Minoura handlebar double cage holder on. Looks pretty sharp.

the minoura mount can be centered on the stem, the velo orange one looks like it needs to be offset, is that true?
the only thing i dislike about the minoura mount is it's black, i thought about painting it silver, but with the cage mounted on it i don't notice the color at all. I'm thinking about ordering a velo orange retro cage to use with the mount

Yes, the Velo Orange mount must be offset. You need a cage that grips the bottle if you're going to to use a metal bottle. Otherwise, the rattling will drive you nuts. I speak from experience. That's why I chose the cage I did. The VO retro cage grips, but it's all metal to metal contact, so I'm dubious.
The bottle should be at the same angle as the head tube for maximum visual appeal. Mine is the only one that isn't mounted wrong.

As for visual appeal, I believe Dirtdrop has it backwards, they need to be mounted opposite as the head tube angle, ie if you head tube is at 11 oclock your bottles would be at 1

My UO-9 Peugeot has twin minoura bottle cage mounts on the handlebars, totally love em, but they would be better if teh handlebars had aero levers, imo.

I have a t.a. floating around in my junk pile somewhere, and I have to say it looks a lot more natural to me than the fredly modern ones. I used to use it on special occasions when I thought I'd need more water than usual. But I think it might leave something to be desired with the larger water bottles we use nowadays. Classic water bottles were 8oz smaller.

Here's a couple with the Minoura clamp. My '78 Trek TX-900 and my brother-in-law's '73 Fuji S-10-S. Sure beats using a metal cage clamp on the down tube.
