Who? 1990s Custom Touring Framebuilder
Can anyone remember a builder of touring frames? Very serious guy, emotional about glitz, lack of functionality, & price-point construction at retail. He built custom touring franes & for some years spec'd frame for Japanese mfg. Serious like $2,000 custom, built out & $1200 Japanese mfg.--that was in 1993 dollars.
Also, he did front and rear racks--the front for panniers & can't remember configuration for rear rack. It's the rack I'm looking for.
Appreciate it, if anyone has long memory. Or who's making a substantial rear rack in 2009?
And thanks to all who helped me in deciding to, & spec'ing parts for Serotta Club Special. It's great; I'm a bit wobbly, especially using down tube shifters.
Best,
Richard Moss

Mixetmaniac (left out the "a" & ended up with a DSM class. Fixed on re-read.) Surly I know--at least their toe straps & new to me, top tube covers. (& Pake). Tubus and Jandd are new names to me. (I wonder where they are buried in google search "touring racks." Less and less useful.

Some of these may be overkill, some underkill, but check out https://www.velo-orange.com/racks.html and https://www.rivbike.com/products/list/bags_and_racks .
Sorry, I think I got derailed by the first part of the message and missed the real question the first time around.

Surly has been making the Nice Rack for a few years now, if not longer. Tubus and Jandd have been around forever. Imo, Tubus is pretty much the standard in cromoly racks. The Jandd Expedition has an equally high reputation in my book and is a bit cheaper than Tubus. Surly being the most expensive of the three, last time I looked (~$150).

Just looked at Nigel Symthe Big Box, spotted as English right away. Reminds me of Nigel Fogg's camera bags, hand-made by him & wife bee somewhere in France. (Tamarkin & google Fogg bags).
