To me, that's some of the charm of these bikes. We have grown to demand obsessive standards of finish. Look at the shoreline of those lugs, it looks like a gravel road. And this is a pretty clean example of a production bike from that time.

Nice one, BigWoo. I've had a couple of St. Etiennes, both straight gauge 531 tubing in the main frame and metric sized (with a Reynolds decal in French in the downtube, just below the head tube lug). The first was a bit too small, so I sold it off. The second is my size and is set up as my single-speed porteur w/ front Cetma rack. It's really light weight and a zippy rider. The only problem is that the French-threaded fixed cup repeatedly comes loose. I think I even used loctite the last time I tightened it, but it's come loose again. Hmm.

Has anyone ever pinned one of these (tighten it up, drill + tap BB and cup, and put a 5 mm screw in)?
