Peugeot Garage sale find.
Hi all,
Not sure if this is classic or vintage. Can you help me date it?
Has a German Bike shop sticker on it. Cool!
10 speed Peugeot, 700cc tires, tire generator lights, aluminum fenders, quick release hubs, looks like a braized (sp?) aluminum frame. Very light bike.
I need to take off the chain but can't find the master link...duh! What am I missing here.
The rear (I forget how to spell it) Derailer comes off with the tire. Is that normal. On my Schwinn it is mounted to the frame.
Many thanks for help.
Paul

My guess is you need a chain breaker.
The deraileur should come with a small screw and a nut shaped like the drop out (sorry forgot what its called). I have found bikes that dont have this though and the derailleur just falls out with the wheel. your LBS might just give you one for free when youbuy the chain breaker.
Thats a nice looking bike man, it has a rack, fenders and everything. Does the generator work?
any serial numbers?

I'll look for the serial number.
The deraileur has a little screw hole but there is not a corresponding hole on the drop out.
So I take it, the chain does not have a master link. Interesting.
Thanks,
Paul

Do my eyes (and your photography) deceive me - or does that rear-derailleur have 3 jockey-wheels in it?
+1 on a chain-tool. Everyone who has a bicycle should have one of these.

More peugeot pictures.
Thanks for the help,
Sticker on the bottom of the crank says. 3041449
Then below the number PX8M 57
Is there a "universal" chain breaker. The links on this bike are different than my schwinn.
The lights do work. 2 jockey wheels. one is broken. Is that part easy to get?
Here are some more pics.
She's a-little worn but not shot.

There should be another stamped into the metal somewhere, its either under the crank or on the left rear drop out.
The derailleur uses a pinch bolt setup, a bolt goes through it and threads into another piece. When its tightened it pinches tight onto the frame. The bolt doesnt go through a hole in the frame but goes through the existing axle slot.

Thanks Miamijim,
That Peugeot webpage will be a big help for my restoration.
The bike is a PX8M 57mm frame. Built between 1979 and 1983.
A+ man, big thanks.

Nice find! That is an awfully short frame.
I still kick myself for letting my P8 go.

Actually that is bone stock off the self right down to the Generator. My bet is that was a military drag back from Europe that was put in the garage and forgot about. It is how most commuters are equipped. Generator lights are the law in places like Germany.

Ok you went and got us pictures so I went and got you some.
These are what you need. Chain tool is between $4-5 dollars. It comes with instructions and pictures. the other object is the little "nut" I was talking about. Notice the shape of it.
It fits by using a bolt (I used a long bolt for demonstration, the real one is short). Again your Local bike shop might give these for free when you buy the chain tool.
It fits on the drop outs like so. Note how its rounded on one side and flat on the other. Just screw on the derailleur like in the previous picture.
Jocky wheels for derailleurs are cheap. Again if your LBS has one lying around they might give it to you or sell it for a buck or two.
Good Luck Pwallon!

If that chain tool is decent I'd like to know where to find one. I broke my $10 tool this morning and said enough of buying the same cheap tool again. I got the $30 Park CT-3. It makes the metal melt like butter.

Yes, spend the extra money on the Park tool. It's very nice. Good tools make every repair so much nicer.

My brother in law was stationed in Germany and while he and my sister were there they bought a couple used German spec bikes to get around on. They sold theirs to another couple that recent came in when they got transferred back stateside but a lot of them get dragged back.

Park chain tool or Multi-tool?
REI sells the Park tool and some multi-tools that have chain tools as well.
Says that the single tool works on all chains. Is that the same for all of them?
https://www.rei.com/search?query=park...=50&button.y=8
Wadda-ya'll-think. Single tool or multi.
Thanks,
Paul
