'89 Bottecchia
I'm seriously considering getting this. A 1989 Bottecchia cropped up for sale locally. The ad doesn't have many specifics, but they manage to make it seem like something really special. I've been itching for a nice italian bike with high end components, but could I find a better/older/more interesting bike for $650 or less?
The only informative part of the ad:
"1989 Italian road bike. Columbus slx steel, Campy/Cinelli/Mavic components."

I'd say that $650 is too much unless you really like how it rides and it is your size and the condition is perfect. It is hard to tell from the photos but the components don't look like high-end Campy stuff either...

Yeah you would need to know what the frame material is specifically as there was a high end model with campy stuff and a low end version. Both had Campy, Mavic and Cinelli so those features don't help the description.

Did Bottecchia use the Columbus SLX tubing on both the high and low end models? I figured $650 was a bit high. I told them $450 cash, so we'll see. Thing is, I'm not out to find some pristine diamond of a bike, I just want something interesting and fun to ride.

No. They used TSX, SL, SLX and a few others. All were at various price points but featured Campy, Mavic, etc. Beyond the frame difference they were different quality of components. I think the higher end used Record Campy parts.

Not that I'm aware of at least in the US. I know the late 80's Bottecchia SLX bikes were available with C-Record, Mavic, and Dura Ace but I've never seen one with lower components than those. They did sell bare frames however so someone could have built one up any way they wanted and Euro market bikes were probably available with a wider range of components. $450 is probably a fair price.
