Simplex downtube shifter troubles

So I've taken the d/t shifters from a PX-10 and am trying to transfer it to my PSV10 (same year 1983), but the wing bolt that secures the shifters to the bosses doesn't seem like it wants to thread and I'm a bit worried about forcing it.

I can thread maybe 3-4 turns before it stops. What do you guys think? Anyone else run into an issue like this?

Try going the other direction: mount the levers off the PSV10 onto the PX10. Don't force anything. Clean the threads up, use a decent grease.

Are the bolt threads about the same length?

Are you asking if you should force it when the threads obviously don't match? Do you really have to ask?

Simplex used wierd threads on some of their shifters. Post a close up of your bosses and I'll tell you what you need.

Unfortunately I dont have the bolt or shifters from the PSV10. Just the ones off the PX-10

I can thread it in a few threads and the only reason I brought up forcing it was because of what looks like paint inside of the bosses, but looks like the PX-10 has it as well... Here's a couple of pictures. Let me know if they're adequate or I can try retaking some more (crapps p&s camera).

I was hoping you had the bosses with flats so I could send you some Simplex Retrofrictions.

Are your shifters like these?

I'm glad I didn't go out and bid on retrofriction shifters since I'm not even sure what is compatible and what isn't. I'm not sure what the PSV10 originally came with, but the ones off the PX-10 are these...

Those are the ones I've been looking for. They're from an '83 PX10? I thought they were much earlier than that. I have the Criteriums from a '74 PX10 and I've never liked the way they look with the phony plastic leather covers.

I've never seen such long bolts on a Simplex shifter. Do the threads match and they're just bottoming out?

They thread in maybe 3-4 threads on my PSV10 and stop nowhere near bottoming out. However, they thread just fine into the PX-10 and thread fully.

I was just out in the garage playing around with Simplex shifter bosses and bolts and I discovered that some of the bosses take SAE bolts instead of metric. Try a 3/16" bolt in that boss. If it fits, you should be able to get the bolts at a hardware store. Hopefully, the head will fit the plastic wingnut. Be careful with those wingnuts. I had to buy a set of shifters just to get wingnuts to replace broken ones.

I'll bet those shifters would look fantastic after polishing on a cotton wheel with some tripoli compound.

I tried polishing with Brasso and it actually gleams pretty nice. I'm sure it could use more polishing.

Too late tonight, but that's the first thing I'll do tomorrow! I REALLY hope it works as this is really the only hitch in my building of the bike... Well that and learning to to adjust derailleurs and shifters for the first time ever.

The shifters that Tigerprawn shows are identical to the ones that were on my PSV-10. Dirtdrop's suggestion about the bolts should work.

if that don't take the prize! The French using SAE threading...who ever saw THAT coming? Next we'll find some Pug with Whitworth threads...amazing
I had some similar Simplex shifters that seemed not to be AL alloy but rather some sort of zinc alloy. They would take a shine but never got to be mirror-bright owing to the metal used. Yours are different enough that they could be AL.

I ran to the hardware store today and found bolts that fit. Unfortunately, they are not hex caps, but I'll take what I can get. For future reference, I bought 10/24 - 1/2".

Does anyone happen to have a diagram of the simplex shifters? I'm assembling them but I want to make sure I have the washers and bits in the right order.

I've got the correct bolts if you can't find any. I'm not giving them away. I'm tired of giving people parts to solve their problems and not getting so much as a thank you.

They know who they are.

I got some bolts that fit thanks to your help earlier. I'll just keep my eye out for some hex cap ones as I bike around .

Do you happen to know the correct assembly of the shifters or have a diagram? I feel like I got it, but I'm second guessing myself

The bolts I have came from some NOS banded Prestige shifters I got on eBay for 99 cents. I think shipping was $4. The seller discovered that the pinch bolt was missing, so he refunded all of my money and shipped it anyway. All I wanted was the wingnuts, so I guess I'll make an exception and give you the bolts. PM me your address and I'll mail them in an envelope. You need bolts that fit your wingnuts.
