Brand new tire slashed - still useable?

If this had happened to the original tires I wouldn't be asking. I just got some new Vredestein Fortezza SE's and on day two the rear tire got slashed by a freakishly sharp rock. The tube is flat, but I can't find a hole anywhere near the slash. I think it may have just popped. The slash is a little under an inch long and goes all the way through for about a quarter inch on the sidewall. Am I $25 in the hole or would it be safe to put a new tube in there? I've never even had a flat in all my years, so I figured I should ask you guys.

It goes all the way through for about the bottom half of the cut.

no, don't ride that, the pressure on the tube will cause it to try and poke through the hole, and it will quickly fail

That same thing happened to me with a brand new Panaracer Pasela. I was far from my starting point when it blew out. I had a spare tube and some of those clear Park emergency tire repair things. I made it back but the tire was a write off.

Sorry, the tire is toast.

mmm, that's what I thought. I just wasn't ready to let it go

I liked the Fortezza SE quite a lot for the few miles I put on them, but I'm considering a Vittoria Zaffiro instead ($10 cheaper). What's the good word on the Zaffiro's?

Tire is shot. At least it wasn't a $100 Conti.

when i rode bmx, we would put crisp packets or cardboard over the holes in the tire. It would last a while but eventually end with another blown innertube.
