RD: Suntour Vx or Cyclone RD-6000?

Trying to decide which of these to use on a 1986 Miyata 710. It came stock with the Cyclone. I've only used the earlier Cyclone RD-1700 unit, which is a great RD; don't know how the RD-6000 measures up.

I have used the Vx, and it functions very well, and is 10 grams (whoopee!) lighter.

So if anyone can comment on the Cyclone unit, I'd be much obliged.

I don't know from the Cyclone, but I'll vouch for the Vx any day.

Agreed; no complaints with the Vx - it's reliable and crisp. I'm pretty sure the Cyclone would be considered an upgrade, but I kind of like the first generation stuff and don't have any experience with this model. I guess I'll just ride it and find out how it works, which I presume is pretty well. I was more or less looking for confirmation that they aren't prone to breakage or anything of that nature.

I use all three, the Vx, the 1st generation Cyclone and the 2nd generation that's pictured. Visually, I like the older styles better but was pleasantly surprised at how well the newer Cyclone performed. Very quiet, very quick.

I vote Cyclone, though the VX is an excellent derailleur too.

+1 Cyclone. I like all the Suntour products, but the Cyclone is a nice step up from the Vx.

Never tried a Cyclone but I've just got a VX - GT (long cage) for my current build and it handles 13-34 sprockets with 32/44/52 chain rings no problem, I love it!

Thanks for the replies. I'll try out the Cyclone once I get this thing cleaned up. 1986 Miyata 710 I found on the rack outside my LBS for the Memorial Day sale. Looks to be all original but for the unfortunate so-called saddle.

Cool looking bar wrap.

+1 for cyclone. I have a Miyata with that same Suntour Vx RD, and my Raleigh with a 1st gen. Cyclone. They both shift well but the cyclone is the definition of crisp.

From '75 thru '81 Cyclone was the top and then the second from the top of the Suntour line. Plus I think the 1st gen. cyclone stuff looks really cool...especially the black bodied parts.

Have the VX on my 1980 Trek 412 and the Cyclone on my 1978 Bridgestone Kabuki Diamond Touring. Both are nice deraileurs. I would also have gone with the Cyclone on the Miyata.

Of the two, the Cyclone was second from the top just below Superbe and considered to be mid high end components; in fact some of the Cyclone stuff was actually lighter then Superbe, and a lot of race fans in the day preferred the Cyclone due to slightly lower weight, and lower price point then Superbe.

The Vx was a low level group for Suntour, while good in it's own right they were heavier and not as polished looking and did not function as well as the famed mid level VgT's and the Cyclone's. The Vx was just a tad better then Suntour's lowest end components called the AR and AG.

Do yourself a long term favor and go with the Cyclone.
