20 mm colnago seat post

Hello,

I have a Colnago Oval CX frame that is missing its seat post. The seat post has a diameter of 20 mm. I was wondering if anyone on this board has any ideas about where to find one, or if they could point me in the right direction to talk to a colnago collector(s) who might possess such a thing.

I am also considering machining a 7/8" post down to the right size. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm having a hrad time believing its a 20mm post....pics by any chance.

If it does take a 20mm post your in trouble, machining something down may be your only option.

Here is a fine example of the frame from Ray Dobbins:

The diameter of hole in the frame measures ~ 20.0 mm so I assume the seat post is about this size as well.

I ran into the same problem when looking for a 20mm something seat post for a 1993 peugeot triathlon (cf tubes). All the places I called claimed that what I was looking for never existed...

I've never seen anything like that....

I guess you could machine something down. You may be able to find a smaller inexpensive post, something like a Kalloy or SR because they tend to have thicker walls and machine it down.

If you need a short one, I believe I might have one somewhere (something like 120 mm long). Otherwise, send a note to Colnago in Italy.

that is a rather unusual configuration. and I do not see how you gat any advantage out of it, the seat post can't be that much lighter than a 'standard' diameter.

As mentioned earlier, I DO have one. It is a shortened one (it was hacksawed off) that measures 14 cm from the bottom of the shaft to the top of the shaft, so you can get about 10 cm of extension from the top of the seat lug until the saddle rails. I'd be happy to send it to you for the cost of mailing if you are really going to use it.

BTW, it seems odd that you say that Colnago does not have any of these posts as it is the same one that is used in the reversible seatpost that they patented and marketed for a while. The last time that I was in Cambiago they had many of these reversible posts. Maybe you simply need to ask the right person and ask the right question.

Thank you for the offer but 10 cm is too short for me. I will try Colnago in Italy and the CR email list.

Doubt he'd find this post unless you quote him. So this is for you.

Ouch, that doesn't look like a fun search.

I woudn't cut from 7/8 down to 20mm.
Perhaps 13/16 to 20mm, but few of those are quality alloy posts.

Maybe take a piece of 6061 (or machine it down) and weld it onto the top part of a donor seatpost, and hope the alloys are compatible.

Hopefully Citoyen du Monde will come through with the one he has.

I'm looking for a 28.0mm Colnago seatpost, but fortunately there are a couple of options including shims. Don't you love it when a company makes their own standards.

If I was you, I'd send a note to the seller of these seatposts and see what the inner diameter is.

They have a slot that you don't need. But, you might get lucky with the size. Or, perhaps get something that is close.

And it's probably missing because it snapped in two. If you find a replacement you probably shouldn't sit on it.

This is the kind of need that if you can't get what you need from Colnago, I'd go to Black Sheep and have the fabricate me a nice post. Their work takes the concepts of craftsmanship to another level than most people are ever exposed to.

See the seatposts offered for sale on ebay and linked to by CliffordK. These are the same identical seatposts as you need (to the best of my knowledge and belief). My original post dates back to 2009 and I do seem to recall mailing it to somebody, so I do not believe that I have one anymore.

Thank you. I would indeed not have seen the post if it was not for your quote.
