Italian Bottom Bracket? (1988 Atala)

Short story: Will any 70 mm Italian-threaded bottom bracket fit a 1988 Atala? I have two chainrings, and the bb that was in there (a kind of budget Shimano) seemed to keep the chainrings too close to the frame.

Background: Bought a nice lugged-steel Atala that came with a mix of Campy and Shimano 600 parts. And it had a sort of low-rent bottom bracket. The chainrings were awfully close to the frame, so I added a spacer on the drive side. My first experience with an Italian bottom bracket, I didn't tighten it down enough. Next day, it unscrewed itself and sheared off the plastic retaining cup on the left side.
Can I pick up another retaining cup? I'm calling bike shops around New York, but nobody has a 70mm bb. Should I just pick up a Veloce bb online? 111mm spindle is correct for two chainrings?
Thanks.

PS: Here's a wrinkle. The cranks are Ofmega Super Competitzione. And according to Sheldon Brown's bottom-bracket database, Ofmega cranks don't work with anybody's standard spindles. Baffling.

You didn't clearly say whether your crank was Campy or Shimano 600. If the 600, it may take from a 115-119mm JIS spindle. A 111mm Veloce will be way short. You need to take out what you have and measure.

Any Italian thread cups ought to work, but you'll need to match the spindle to whatever crank you intend to use.

The other wrinkle is the thickness of the cups -- there were two prevailing standards. Thick cups will position the chainrings about 2mm closer to the frame than thin cups.

I have to worry about the thickness of the bottom bracket cups? I didn't buy a Ferrari! It's a bike!

As for the spindle problem, there doesn't seem to be one. The bb in there now seems to work fine with the cranks.

But seeing as there seems to be no bike shop in NYC that stocks an Italian-threaded BB, I will most likely have to buy one online. And to do this properly, I should simply measure the one I have and get one with a slightly longer spindle? And maybe a couple of 70mm spacers in the bargain?

The Nuovo Record/Super Record cups were thicker than everybody else's to accommodate the dirt-ejecting rifling on the spindle hole. And there were spindle changes in the late 70's to accommodate CPSC mandated changes in the crank arms. It gets complicated.

You still haven't told us what model of crank - that may be all the info we need so you can avoid 70mm spacers.

Edit: sorry I missed your PS. And that was all we needed to know, unfortunately. They don't really fit anything. I'd sell 'em and buy a real matched crank/BB set.

I did say, in the PS.
They're Ofmega Super Competitzione cranks.
